I am not from Investment Banking. I can comment on this as i am in banking sector for last 6 years and i recently did MBA finance.
IB (inv banking) is not a big market in canada and the competition is extremely high as the sector has high paying jobs.
usually, it is extremely difficult to get into this sector. you need one or more of the following
1. degree from a great school with more than 90% score and top marks in quantitative and finance courses
2. need to know people (usualy buzz word - networking)
3. additional qualifications like CFA level one or more
4. great preparation to answer finance interviews
Assuming that the candidate has most of the needed stuff, he can try for
1. investment banking - buy/sell sides
2. research - equity research for eg
3. trading & sales
4. risk management (front office)
the other option is to enter the cost center areas of banking like
1. IT
2. operations
3. financial control (accounting)
also, remember that AGE is a big criterion. companies want 'young turks' in high paying financial jobs.
