As I have mvoed back home, I am getting to observe more things. I have an a/c with a PSU bank. Two things that struck me:

1. The Assistant Mgr is on some kind of religious vrath. He's wearing a saffron colour dhoti and a shirt, walking around barefoot and with lots of threads on his wrist and a big red bindi on his forehead. Wait a minute. This is a PSU bank dealing with so many customers, doing business worth crores and this idiot is dressed like this? I asked the branch mgr about this and I was informed that this is going on for the past two weeks. When pressed, the branch mgr confessed that this is an union issue and he cant do anything abt it. Just to see that guy walking around in that dress, made me squirm in the chair and I wanted to get out soon.

2. As I had to provide copies of some important docs to the bank, the branch mgr sent out the peon to make xerox copies. I got upset. What if the guy loses some papers when he goes out to make copies? Why dont the bank have a copier? In the branch mgr cabin? I understand that a copier may be misued by the staff. At least the branch mgr can keep a small printer/copier in his office and keep a tab on it. When suggested, he was not aware of a machine like this. In the end I had to go and make copies and provide to the bank.

Well, well. I am learning to cope with the ridiculous.

What else were you expecting from PSU banks?

During my last visit few years ago, on of the PSU bank's branch I deal with still did not have internet banking facility. Their printer was broken which is used to print balances and transactions on passbook. Assistant manager was surrounded by bank's customers, no queues. Whoever can catch the attention first of the assistant manager would be served first. Every clerk would act busy and you have to interrupt them, otherwise you would be standing in the bank forever.

The dress should not matter as long as your work is done. In Canada your financial data is more important to be secured so as to avoid any kind of identity theft as the banking system in Canada is one of the weakest system in the world. India's banking system is much more secure and there is no concept of identity theft. You should feel that you are better protected there.

Hi KumarM,

I have been following your updates with much interest. Thanks for keeping us all in the loop.

1) One of the sad things in India is, there is no separation between State and religion in public/private sectors. The Asst Mgr could even do a Havan right on the office staircase and no one will object.
Every time I visit banks in India i get the feeling that, the more things change the more they remain the same.

2) Rajcanada has correctly observed, the bank clerks try to act busy and completely ignore people standing in the line. You are required to lower your voice and get their attention by “Excuse me, Sir (or Madam)..err. Can you please…uhmm..?”. This attitude exists in all government offices.

regards,

Seenappa.

Though I cant comment on the id theft etc., one can easily check my savings a/c balance. Say I give u a cheque, u can call my bank and ask for the balance in my a/c using my a/c no. on the cheque. Where I have my savings a/c is on the cheque along with the address. No other info asked. Is this a secure system? Will a bank in Canada provide balance details like this?

You should see the end result.
I am very comfortable even if someone(All tellers know it) knows my bank balance as long as he/she cannot alter it. In India you can get bank balance if you just know the cheque no. but the same may not be true in Canada. There is no harm just knowing the bank balance. In Canada banks pretend to be secure but they can give loans to someone if ur identity is stolen but the same is not true in India. In India most of the activities needs your signature/photo and your physical presence to get the loans. You can decide which one is more dangerous - knowing bank balance or giving loans without any identification. Canadian banks still learning how to implement password policy in online banking (Still 10 yrs behind the Indian banks)

KumarM...

Your first hand experiences are quite interesting and I like the way you are taking them in stride.

I'd rather rely on someone that's posting based on true, first hand and current experience than from people sitting in Canada and post some delusional opinions.
