hey ON

I hav also managed to get an acceptance from U of Toronto for my masters in mech engg. I already hav anoyher admit from mcgill but I will prefer U ofT. also I will try to talk to one of the profs and try to change to thesis based masters if I get some good grades in 1st sem.

Hey ON , I believe u did ur PhD from U of Ottawa and are now somewhere in US. So tell me how good are the chances of getting a job for a grad student from a good univ like UofT. Does it depend on ur supervisor and the recommendations he can give.

U have provided a lot of help on this forum but I dont know much abt u- ur education, background, location etc. mayb we can learn from u.

MB...congrats.... Let this serve as a warning notice to all those doubting thomasses (oops sorry dont know an inter-religion translation of this term :D )

Dude..its U of T all the way :) Come on..u can see all the desi babes there ;)

Yeah I did my PhD at U of Ottawa...with quite a well renowned Professor, and the answer to both ur questions is yes... You need a good supervisor (helps you academically...more publications with him..more name for yourself)...As for Jobs..since you are in MechEng... you will have to show some product development..(in our terminology, Hardware)...that will be your USP...papers can only take u so much..

BTW MB, can you please describe how you went on to obtain admission at U of T..It can help other such prospective students...What all documents were required etc.,...and what kind of SOP you wrote (I ask this just for guidelines...so that others can benefit from it)

Best of luck

I have a three year BSc degree (Physics, math, economie) from India.

Can you please advise me what are my career option in Canada(Montreal). What
would you suggest as a career if I was to continue my education?

Personally, I am thinking about becoming a physic or math teacher but I
don't know what it takes as education in Canada or where to go to evaluate my degree from India etc to become a teacher.

The Idea is, I want to continue my education where my Study in India be counted and not wasted.

Please advise.

Thank you in advace for your help. Email me at

Regards,

Jeanie,
You have the following options :-

1.) You can join a Masters program but it will be a conditional admission to Masters. YOu cannot join any MBA program (I think HR is covered under a MBA program) without a GMAT...unless of course you join a French language program, wherein which you will be exem[ted from GMAT, but you have to demonstrate proficiency in french.

2.) Once you join the program, you will have to take a few pre-requisite courses in order to "come up to their standards"...This all depends on the university and the department you choose.

As a PR, in Canada, he will have to pay lesser fees as compared to any other foreign student

<<I am a prospective immigrant from India likely to be moving to Canada in about three to four months from now.I have a few questions for which I request to have answers.>>

That means you plan to move around end July,2006

<<My son (who would also be a Canadian PR) has secured admission to a couple of U.S universities for masters in Computer sciences. Would it be easier for him to get F1 student visa from Canada in comparison to getting it from India, which as we all know have lot of uncertainties.>>

Considering the timeline, assuming he plans to join in September, 2006 he has an option to apply early from India or after July from Canada. It seems that applying after July 2006 will cut it too sharp and he may not be able to join Sep.2006 session. Timelines show that he should apply from India. Secondly, if US Embassy wants to conduct a background check then case would be internally referred to India and may cause delay. About 70,000 students go every year to study in US, and given that he will be getting offer from a good University he stands a good chance in India. You have to take the final decision.

<<Secondly, would you advise him to pursue his higher education in Canada itself rather than proceeding to U.S. in which case what would be his chances of getting admission to one of the better universities of Canada and getting financial assistance. He has got very good scores in both GRE and TOEFL 1490 in GRE and 300 in TOEFL (which is 100%).He also has very good references from his professors in India. But unfortunately, the only drawback is that he had a few arrears in one or two years of his B.E (due to the scam in ANNA UNIVERSITY that was unearthed recently, otherwise he is considered a brilliant student who stood third in the SOUTH INDIA ITALENT CONTEST conducted by CII recently) which he has cleared subsequently.>>

With his scores he should be studying in US. Once he applies and gets offers from Universities in US/Canada he can decide which University to join, and also consider funding, if that is available. Without concrete offers, valid choices do not exist.

<<He is definitely interested in pursuing Phd and become an academic in Computer Science.>>

Then he should be able to get the funding even in US, maybe from second year onwards.

<<My last question is about myself.I am a Post Graduate in Psychology and possess a Post Graduate Dip.in Guidance and Counselling. In addition to this ,I also possess a Post Graduate Hons.Dip.in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. I would like to acquire a certification or a Diploma programme in Canada in Counselling which would enable me to get the license to practise counselling.Could you possibly suggest whether I would be able to secure admission for which I could finance myself and suggest some good colleges where I could pursue my studies.>>

This is the right time to conduct your search, if you are not already late for Sept.2006. Your search area will depend on area where you want to settle in. If you have not already done so, you can start your search from link:
http://oraweb.aucc.ca/showdcu.html
and
http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/postsec/postsec.html

<<My last question is perhaps not very clear. This is so because I am myself not very clear about how I should take my aspirations forward. Incidentally both the qualifications that I have mentioned above have been through Distance education programmes.Hence I may not be able to bring in references from Professors under whom I studied but could perhaps be from some other academics. I have been a practising counsellor for quite sometime with an NGO.>>

You can, maybe, have some references from from your old Psycholgy Professors, some from the NGO head where you have been working, some from senior colleagues in Psychology. In worst case scenario you may have to start the studies from lower level than what you would normally envisage. You must secure all the referrals, citations, experience record, transcripts and other documents in requisite copies before you leave India, as operating remotely from Canada may not be so easy.
