Just heard on 680 news. According to Ipsos-Reid survey, 1 out of 10 Canadian have faced racism at some point in their life.

Tomorrow, one of the federal minister is innagurating a program, for making work place more "race-friendly"

You know, funny it may seem ..... we immigrants become more consious and sensitive to racial discrimination once we are out of our element in our countries ...... however ..... My personnel experience shows that there is more racial discrimination in Pakistan or India as compared to Canada .

What we do not realize is ..... even by not discriminating we already ARE placing people in categories and classes .....

We refuse to look at our own before pointing finger at others. Remember the word "caste"? Mandal commission? SC/ST? IMO, we have more racism and discrimination in India than Canada or USA.

Desis complain whenever there is a lay off. Remember the maids back home when your parents told them "kal se mat aana". Has anyone thought abt their feelings? Nah.

Maybe because of our preconceived or enforced notion, that there is no injustice in Western world? Maybe that discrimination in India is more taken as granted?

But still, I would not equate discrimination in India, with that we face here. Regarding reservations, it is now more of backlash, and would not comment more on that.

I do not think, there can be a world without discrimination. It is an utopian idea. It is an unwelcome reality we have to face. People will always have their biases.

Also, regarding layinoff your maid, your family is not the only single source of income for her. And for them, demand is probably equal to or more than supply. And I do not think, anybody laid off a maid, just for economical reasons. Normally, people are well aware of the economic/social/family condition of maid, and are normallly sympathetic with her. I do not think, that if I was well to do in India, I would knowingly starve a family to save my 100 rupees.

Nobody likes it when the shoe is on the other foot :). Maybe its a divine plan that some of us have to come to Canada to realise this...be it w.r.t unemployment, bigotry or social acceptance. The very things taken for granted when one was on the top(even middle-upper middle) of the pecking order back home :). What was once fair is now suddenly unfair.
I guess, its easier to judge than be judged.
