One good thing about Calgary is that even though temperature might be sub-zero, the sun does come out & you feel comfortable (as somebody told me "You never adjust to this kind of cold, you sort of develop a tolerance to it".)
There are fluctuations in temperature so it might go from -30 to -5 & it would be sunny so it gets ok.
What seems to have helped me though is my practice of Yoga & pranayama. Even when I would be walking in -35 degrees every night from downtown to home for about 25 minutes, I would do Pranayama which tended to keep me warm.

Why not try appropriate clothing suitable for that kind of winter!!! and perhaps take a bus too. Nothing wrong with Pranayama though

Isn't that where part of your 50% + taxes goes?
The tax system in Canada is something that really makes me wonder about moving there.
