Hi guys,

I am in the process of applying for a job in West Vancouver. Would the people who live in Vancouver brief me about the area & cost of living (rent, public transit passes, health premium) in that area or nearby areas? Also facility of public transit.

Currently I am in Calgary. The job is in retail computer sales.

Thanks.

Hi bill2gates,

Rent ranges from 400 dollars to 1500 dollars per month depending on area & apartment.

Public transit pass is available for a bunch of 10 tickets or monthly pass. It is valid for both local train & bus. Monthly pass for adult is $70. Bunch of 10 tickets is $17.50. Public transit is generally efficient except that the frequency is less on many routes & especially if you are working late & get home after 9 at night then buses are every 45 minutes or 1 hr. I, for example, travel around 1 hr. & 15 minutes on a route which otherwise takes 15 minutes by car.

Health premium is $44 per month for the principal applicant. I pay $88 per month for me, my wife & 2 kids. You get health coverage from the very first day of landing in Alberta.

Fort Mcmurray & Edmonton are other places where you can get good jobs. They are more expensive compared to Calgary but then you get better salaries too. Many people live in Calgary or Edmonton & work at Fort McMurray during the week & come back on weekends.

Calgary is a good city as such, has all facilities like shopping malls, theatres, recreation facilities like sports, etc. One has to be prepared for -30 degrees cold in winter although it is not that much throughout. Generally stays sub-zero though in winter.

Thanks.

the population of alberta is so low which explains the harsh weather. It is less then GTA. about 3 million

As you probably know, Vancouver is more expensive than Calgary. West Vancouver is certainly more expensive. The place is certainly very beautiful, though. One good thing is the excellent public transport. You can probably stay in Burnaby and commute to West Vancouver by skytrain and/or bus.

Rents vary depending on area - depends on what you're looking for. 1 B/R in Vancouver downtown could be $1000+ a month, whereas in Burnaby you can probably get decent ones for around $700 and up. There are cheaper ones as well. With skytrain you can travel to vancouver downtown in 20 minutes anyway.

Health premium - waiting period is approx 3 months. To be precise, 2 full months and the remainder of the month when you landed - i.e, if you landed here on June 15th, then 15 days in June plus, Aug & Sep.

Let me know if you need any further info.

Not really; atleast not for many of us! I lived in the North-East part of US for quite a few years, and you have 3+ months of sub-zero temp there as well. Yes Calgary can get colder, but you begin to enjoy it!! There is so much to do in winter! Or you can just sip a hot chocolate at home and cuddle, watch a nice movie!

Certainly way way better than 45 deg celsius in summer in the middle east :)

West Vancouver is definitely the best city to live in Canada, one the priciest locations. It is immensely beautiful and much sought after for people looking for reasonable accommodation! Make WV your choice.
