It all depends on where one lives . For example Miami , LA are crime ridden areas and also many areas in almost all US cities.BUt each city has good and safe areas as well. Likewise in Canada it is not safe everywhere . In Toronto there are many crime ridden areas . In my opinion we cannot generalise.

I was visting a small city in Northwestern ontario. I was with friends at a restaurant. We just finished our lunch and were coming out and suddenly two guys who were backing their car in the parking lot hit my friend's car. It was a minor accident (Only the car bumper was slightly damaged). My friend called 911 and the police arrived promptly at the scene within 15 minutes, completed the report.
It all depends on where you live

I was doing a search for 'Boston trip' and came across this interesting thread ...
Whether the Officer comes in 5 minutes or 30 minutes may not be indicative of how safe the place is - it is the crime statistics which should be able to tell that ...
For eg though the Police comes quickly to down town Toronto , there are more crimes and stabbings as compared to say a place like Bracebridge or some areas there where the Police might take more time in reaching but the crime is low.
In my 8 years in NA , the only fist fight I have witnessed was in Monroeville PA ... nothing here in Canada .
What do you think folks ..Is Canada safer than the US , one to one ?

Fido.
There shouldn't be any doubt about Canada on that perspective.
I interact with recently retired dual citizens here, I was able to discuss lot of things in detail with them. I know them well and respect them for their service, and value their opinion.
God damn this February windchill...
And buying winter tires and switching them,
And more

No comparison.
I used to commute everyday from Windsor, via Detroit, to the suburbs of Michigan for work.
Detroit used to look like a bombed-out war zone, with abandoned homes and even buildings. Extremely unsafe, and in typical North American parlance, was a veritable shith0le. Boy, was I relieved to return home to Canada every day.
From what I heard, it has gotten even worse, and now looks like a city from a dystopian sci-fi novel.
Agreed that Detroit is an outlier and should not be used as a basis of comparison, but Canadian cities are, on the whole, much safer . Most other US cities are nice places to live as well.
However, they(Canadian cities) are not safe enough for you to letting your guard down and not applying commonsense required for big city living.
