Hello,
Any suggestions / tips before buying a car seat / stroller ? And where to buy from ? What all to check ?
Also how about a used car seat ? Is it safe ? How can we check if it is safe ? Secondly is it hygenic to use a used car seat ?

Do not buy used seats/ strollers.
Also do not buy cheaper stuff . Look for some deals in advance and buy products from reputed brands . I know people who bought used/ cheap stuff had to discard them in no time and buy good ones. If only they did it right the first time.

My Views:
My little one is almost 6 years. I have changed 3 car seats in the last 6 years. Reason being, there are differnt ones for different age/weight groups.
1. The 1st one lasted us around 7 months. It was purchased new. (Actually we got it as a gift from my brother-in-law). At the end of 7 months it was still in a decent shape. Since then we have been circulating it amongst our friends and atleast 3-4 friends have used it.
2. The 2nd one, a used one from one of our friends, lasted us a little over 2 years. That too is in circulation as it stands today.
3. The 3rd again we bought. This is a booster seat. Which is still being used for the past 3 years, and we still need it for another couple of years aatleast.
Bottom line - Since the first 2 are not used for a long time, I'd prefer to get a used one, as long as it is in a good shape. The covers are washable, so this resolves your hygene issue.
The booster seat will be used for a longer duration, and can be bought.
As regards the stroller, it was a matching set with the 1st car seat. That too is in circulation. The thing I found about strollers is that the threads on the wheels wear out after a few years, and it becomes difficult to use it.
