What is Canadian Experience? Immigrants Puzzle!
By:

Many new arrivals to Canada and Toronto in particular discover that they cannot get an IT job as soon as they arrive - no matter their level of skill or experience. The reasons given usually center around language skills and lack of "Canadian experience".

What is Canadian experience?

Canadian experience usually means having experience interacting with people in the context of the culture found in Canada. Every culture is different. For instance, relationships between supervisors and sub-ordinates vary from culture to culture; and country to country. And Toronto is the most cultural diverse city in the world!

How can I get Canadian experience without a Canadian job?

Getting Canadian experience without a job:
Volunteer. Volunteering for a charitable or cultural organization will help you to get Canadian experience and references.

There are many charitable and cultural organizations in Toronto and across Canada that need volunteers.

When you volunteer you are working. And you have someone that you will report to - a supervisor. You work with other people - usually in English.

The end result is that you gain Canadian experience. Experience that provides you with practical experience about the culture. Practical experience in speaking English and learning the local idiom, expressions, etc. And you gain References - from the person or persons that supervized you; and the people that you work with.

How do I find a charitable organization?
There are a number of groups in Toronto that can direct you to charitable organizations that need your help and in turn can help you to gain Canadian experience.

The Possibilities Project is a great place to start looking. http://www.possibilitiesproject.com/

err... what club???

We basically tell people when they ask about Canada- we say come here with a five year plan- do not expect that right at the outset you will get what you came for. Work out a five year plan and then work your plan. You will be surprised at the dividends you reap. You won’t become Carly Fiona but you won’t be down in the dumps as well.

unfortunately, most people who come here do so with expectations that employers hang out at airports with breifcases full of money, the same way a taxi driver does in india... and that they will run after you and offer you jobs just because you have a piece of paper that says you are an engineer, even though you dont know how to talk properly, half of the experience you claim to have is highly questionable, and insist on pee-ing on a toilet standing up splattering urine all over the goddamn floor and refuse to use a urinal, thereby making the whole bathroom useless for anyone else...

So how’d you like the twist on Canadian experience?

it should be fairly obvious to any level-headed person that women here definately enjoy more freedom and have more say in matters than women in india... the biggest thing is, you are not so tied down by expectations of a hyppocritical society...

oh btw, one thing a lot of us dont seem to realize is that immigrants are not the only ones who are unable to get a "job in field"... lotsa white guys in the same soup as well... and just because in your mind youe degree or experience is something great and oath-worthy dosnt mean everyone has to think like that... as an example, an mba in india gets very different exposure than an mba here... its just the nature of markets... what applies in one may have no value in another...

converse example, you can get drunk and beat the crap out of your wife and kids in india without so much as a slap on the wrist, but you cant here without getting into a lot of trouble... did i mention the part about burning the woman because of dowry? wonder how that would go down with the authorities in vancouver...

Hey Dubai desie- I like that neoligisation. Cool.
Good to read a post with a mischievous sense of humor.
Are you from the same club as Desimisri?
Good twist to the meaning of Canadian experience- most think it refers to Canadian work experience as you started out with

Big head

That was the collective point of view of ladies from UAE, Bahrain, Eygpt, Somalia, Ethipia, Congo, Kenya, Uganda and other countries which are worse off than India. We know many Indian girls and boys but we belong to a club of non Indian people who have at one time lived or studied in India.
While we were in India there was a story about a politician in North india somewhere who had cut up his wife and put her in a Tandoor- worse than anything you mentioned- but I get your drift.
I don't know how peeing on the floor has anything to do with one's expertise in engineering or whatever. But I get your drift there too.
Thanks for your feedbacks both entrepreneur and you

Nice to see a newer perspective on this thread.

Desimisri, I did check out the poll you'd referred to......interesting that 40% of 843 respondents felt that their immigration was worth it. Wouldn't have seemed that way at all, including on this thread, not too long ago. Incidentally, going back to one of your first posts, I'm an alumni of one of the colleges you listed, brought back fond memories.....

Dubaidesie, welcome to the forum.........like your style, we have a lot of members that wear saffron knickers under their 'dhotis' though (if you know what I mean), just a bit surprised that they haven't taken offence as yet............

Hello Dubai Desi,

I can feel the excitement and the joy that you are goin' thro'

Enjoy Canada.........You have hundreds of reasons to be happy about.....

I only feel sorry about those Ph.Ds /Doctors/ Engineers who end up driving cabs and doing menial jobs for the sake of so called 'STANDARD OF LIVING".

Be a Big Fish in a small pond rather than being a small fish in a big pond !!!!
