What is Canadian Experience? Immigrants Puzzle!
By:

Many new arrivals to Canada and Toronto in particular discover that they cannot get an IT job as soon as they arrive - no matter their level of skill or experience. The reasons given usually center around language skills and lack of "Canadian experience".

What is Canadian experience?

Canadian experience usually means having experience interacting with people in the context of the culture found in Canada. Every culture is different. For instance, relationships between supervisors and sub-ordinates vary from culture to culture; and country to country. And Toronto is the most cultural diverse city in the world!

How can I get Canadian experience without a Canadian job?

Getting Canadian experience without a job:
Volunteer. Volunteering for a charitable or cultural organization will help you to get Canadian experience and references.

There are many charitable and cultural organizations in Toronto and across Canada that need volunteers.

When you volunteer you are working. And you have someone that you will report to - a supervisor. You work with other people - usually in English.

The end result is that you gain Canadian experience. Experience that provides you with practical experience about the culture. Practical experience in speaking English and learning the local idiom, expressions, etc. And you gain References - from the person or persons that supervized you; and the people that you work with.

How do I find a charitable organization?
There are a number of groups in Toronto that can direct you to charitable organizations that need your help and in turn can help you to gain Canadian experience.

The Possibilities Project is a great place to start looking. http://www.possibilitiesproject.com/

bap re bap..Itni Garmi

Well speaking for self, i am fairly new to this site, and yes while i do come across some stuff which is scary theres a dearth of information which one can get here -even some with happy endings which we all like.

What we prospective, in line, garam josh ones should try to do (only a matter of suggestion) is treat the seemingly "negative" (which is real life though) as a boundary marker - quite like the "GO SLOW ACCIDENT PRONE AREA" signs - and exercise caution and not just go running into Canada with the dream of everything being goodie goodie. That is if one wants to do it.

The person whos narrated his misery did his part - though it may only have been for letting off his steam - but the thing is still there for those who want to heed it - those who dont want to can simply click another page.

Another thing is why do we not restrain from "dishum dishum" - its a good thing that virtual reality isnt that developed else we might have had boxing gloves coming out of the screen. ya phir "Control hi nahin hota !!"

Ganimat hein Abhi to internet par hein - amne samne hote - to kya hota - pas kade canadian bolte - "Look man, these guys never grow up" - phir hum bolte - "Hai rabba dekha kitne racist aur discriminating hein yeh gorey". I am sure some of them must surf this site without logging on.

Bhaiya plain si baat hein, aao baat suno, achi lagey to hajam karo nahin to mat karo - koi ghar se bula ke thodi laya hein.

Chalo aab ek kahani ho jaye - Its something which i read quite sometime ago and kept a copy of, it goes as

A little girl went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its
>hiding place in the closet. She poured the change out on the floor and
>counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly
>perfect. No chance here for mistakes. Carefully placing the coins back in
>the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her
>way 6 blocks to Rexall's Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign
>above the door. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to
>give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted
>her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the
>most disgusting sound she could muster No good. Finally she took a quarter
>from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! And what do
>you want?" the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. "I'm talking
>to my brother from Chicago whom I haven't seen in ages," he said without
>waiting for a reply to his question.
>Well, I want to talk to you about my brother," Tess answered back in the
>same annoyed tone. "He's really, really sick... and I want to buy a
>miracle." ''I beg your pardon?" said the pharmacist. His name is Andrew
>and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a
>miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?" We don't sell
>miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you," the pharmacist
>said, softening a little. "Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it
>isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs." The
>pharmacist's brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the
>little girl, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need?" I don't
>know," Tess replied with her eyes welling up. "I just know he's really sick
>and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can't pay for it, so I
>want to use my money." How much do you have?" asked the man from Chicago.
> One dollar and eleven cents," Tess answered barely audibly. "And it's all
>the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to." Well, what a
>coincidence," smiled the man. "A dollar and eleven cents---the exact price
>of a miracle for little brothers. " He took her money in one hand and with
>the other hand he grasped her mitten and said "Take me to where you live. I
>want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the
>miracle you need." That well dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a
>surgeon, specializing in neuro-surgery. The operation was completed without
>charge and it wasn't long until Andrew was home again and doing well. Mom
>and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to
>this place. That surgery," her Mom whispered. "was a real miracle. I
>wonder how much it would have cost?" Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much
>a miracle cost...one dollar and eleven cents .....plus the faith of a
>little child.

So long friends, Time Out

Regards

If you have been lucky to get a foot in the door despite Canadian experience - count your blessings. The unemployment rate is still 7%+ and the bank of canada is in the mood of raising interest rates! You know what that means and implications on both who dont and who do have canadian experience.

Last year the prime reached a high of 5.00% an unemployment was at 7.5% then. Now it is at 4.00% and 7.2%. These can inflate to last year's figures and still the economy won't be any better or worse on the micro scale- i.e on us finding jobs or not.

Makapao- Thanks for thinking I am not of the "mandrax" variety (I've not heard that before but I imagine it means "not negative" or "not a downer";) but I personally think you are too aggressive. Please cool down.
I also think there are more negatives than positives on this site, but if the majority that contribute think that way, there ain't nothin' much we can do about it. And you are right there are almost 9000 members and so few contributors, I wonder why. maybe you have a point- but there are more mature ways of expressing it. Just 'cos you're IIT and worked with microsoft and are now with RIM doesn't give you the right to fly off the handle.

One should keep an open mind.....specially when it comes to and telling and listening about each other's experiences.

Sure, I had major problems in adjusting when i came here. I can recall MANY... yes many things I did wrong and was pointed out by others. It's a new place, new culture, different backgrounds, most things are grey here instead of black and white and surely there is no lack of bull shit no matter where you go and what you do.

But one has listen and maybe think about the issues and points raised by the other person. Simple condemning things will not make things better....be it a desi or any other immigrant from wherever.

I know its a major problem to find a job even after being qualified by immigration, newcomers are expected to have Canadian experience. How will they get the experience if they dont get a job in first place?

In order to fight the system you need to work with the system. There are so many volunteer organisations in Toronto. (can't speak for other places, havent beeen there), thats one way to start...to build some kind of network, to work few hrs a week in your own field for free, get to know more people, etc... I would like to point out that even though you may be volunteering for FREE some organisation will grill you in the interview as if your going for a paid job!!!! I failed my first volunteer interview that I had with some aboriginal organisation for an office assistant cum chaprasi kinda job - IMAGINE THAT!!!!! How retarded is that??

But hey, how many interview calls will you get otherwise?? this is a good way to get some practise for an interview. Even good oppurtunity to learn all the nice ways of saying "NO, you are no good and completely useless to us".

Do some courses... even if its's like 3 weeks course to 6 months bull shit ...aka useless course in your field. At least you'll have some raddi in your hand to show the interviewer you are capable for learning.

I know age matters, the older you are the difficult it is for people to do all this...specially with the tight budget and family and kids to feed. BUT YOU HAVE TO KNOW THIS - you decided to move to a new country... its not going to BED of roses!! did you think you get off the plane and in 2 months you will have a 50,000/year job???? did you??? because I did not think like that.

Now some people will tell me .. in frustration, that they have already done that....all i can tell them is DONT GIVE UP. This is INDEED the land of oppurtunities and you have to give it your best shot.

If you think knowing about Hockey or learning about Golf will give you some faltoo matter so that you can relate to some gora better or make some time pass conversation with someone who can help.. then SO BE IT!
LEARN AND FOLLOW THE GAME! I do that all the time.... who gives a shit.

I know my Manager will give a shit when I tell her tommorow monring about the Hockey score and how Canada pulled off an cool victory against slovakia this week. If it helps me score a few points ...hell, I'll do it!!

When in Rome do as the Romans do, BUT apart from this you have to keep on trying.

<phew im tired of writing all this>

cheers,

Chandresh Ji,

I had mentioned earlier............that canadian Exp....English skills are all Bulls..t reasons........

Preference goes to WHITE COLOR " chapraasis " from Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, Chechenia etc.....Broken English spoken by them is accetable in Canada.......

They have similar culture, lifestyle with Original Canadians.....

I have couple of freinds migrated from Mahe, Goa etc ALL ANGLO INDIANS.......Low level of education.....but English accent

Result ??????? SUCCEESS IN 2 MONTHS IN CANADA..

Unfortunately Sceintists/ Doctors / Engineers migrating from India cant succeed beacuse :

1. They cant instantly change their skin to White
2. There is no Institute in India which guarantees 'CAN ACCENT' with a 6 months crash course.

HI deep,
You some kind of moron? My first post says I was in DXB from 2000-2004. I know people make even USD 1000 per day there- but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I also go on to say I went back to India for less pay. Job satisfaction is where it is at for me basically. I am Goan and I have a pukka Indian Mumbai accent and no stupid English accent for your kind info.
Read before you comment, but I guess you are a typical Dubaiiite- just talk thru your (deep)ass.
