What is Canadian Experience? Immigrants Puzzle!
By:

Many new arrivals to Canada and Toronto in particular discover that they cannot get an IT job as soon as they arrive - no matter their level of skill or experience. The reasons given usually center around language skills and lack of "Canadian experience".

What is Canadian experience?

Canadian experience usually means having experience interacting with people in the context of the culture found in Canada. Every culture is different. For instance, relationships between supervisors and sub-ordinates vary from culture to culture; and country to country. And Toronto is the most cultural diverse city in the world!

How can I get Canadian experience without a Canadian job?

Getting Canadian experience without a job:
Volunteer. Volunteering for a charitable or cultural organization will help you to get Canadian experience and references.

There are many charitable and cultural organizations in Toronto and across Canada that need volunteers.

When you volunteer you are working. And you have someone that you will report to - a supervisor. You work with other people - usually in English.

The end result is that you gain Canadian experience. Experience that provides you with practical experience about the culture. Practical experience in speaking English and learning the local idiom, expressions, etc. And you gain References - from the person or persons that supervized you; and the people that you work with.

How do I find a charitable organization?
There are a number of groups in Toronto that can direct you to charitable organizations that need your help and in turn can help you to gain Canadian experience.

The Possibilities Project is a great place to start looking. http://www.possibilitiesproject.com/

Hi Viks,

There are few ways in which a DESI can change himself to suit to Canada's requirement as highligted by you.

1. Change the color to white - Auto pigmentation
2. Pick up "Canadian" Accent - mock Jim Carrey
3. Pretend "European" Lifestyle........do what Goras do at night......

or be 'BORN AGAIN' in Canada..........What an Irony?????

Do you think a normal Indian/Asian Techie can do that to match the suitability factor........

I would say if Canada needs that.....then let them go to "Chechenya, Slovenia, Romania and get those " Chapraasis".........

Mr. Makpao.....

I can understand ur frustration.....trying to prove your superiority over 225,000 immigrants who legally migrate to Canada.......

Your specific skills might have got you a good job.......but my voice is for the remaining 224,999 people..........

Do you think that those Techies who do not succeed in Canada are all Incompetent ? Even the guys who earn $ 100/hr in US woking for Fortune 500?

If you can succeed in Canada.......dont forget that LALOO can go to Las Vegas and succeed........About you not liking Dubai........remember FLY doesn't like flowers.....it revolves around ditches........

Your liking or disliking Dubai ......doesn't make it part of New Testament.......where every one has to literally follow..........

We are all here to express our view point to prospective Immigrants..............Lets take it in the right spirit......

About time for one of the moderators to step-in. The discussion is not taking us anywhere and is becoming too personal and highly exothermic.

Makapao,

Take it easy, dude. Your contributions are welcome however you're taking the low road of putting people down to make a point and that’s not convincing anybody. It takes no work or intellect to whine about how negative this forum is, what counts is how much work you’re willing to put in to make it more positive.

If you're an established immigrant here, we need people like you here on this forum to expend valuable advice to prospective/struggling immigrants. A success story itself will go a long way in instilling hope in somebody with a similar background who’s looking for a career here. Someone’s superman complex won’t do zip.

I hope you take this in the right spirit and work with us to make things better.

We had a lot of discussion which I patiently read thru.
An idea is just coming to my mind for quite some time now.

All successful or unsuccessful( in terms of money, JOB satisfaction, chilren education, calling siblings or parents to canada.. etc. etc.) persons should work togetherTO GIVE GOOD REFERENCE LETTERS AND CANADIAN EXPERIENCE CERTS. for REALLY GOOD ACTIVE NEW IMMIGRANTS.
Some may go for real industry and business instead of real estate and insurance etc so that our own people can generate jobs like they do in USA.
I know that canadian shortage of good jobs has developed a system so that these jobs only go to goras.
just yesterday, I came across a resume of a canadian..
1. Just a graduate degree.. and he an eduaction specialist for sun life..
How can he be a specialist with no education line studies.
2. he said he is an expert in pension funds... how can he be an expert without any completion of related courses... while they insist on same from us... without that they do not even start considering our application..
So .. do not believe them .. MAKE YOUR OWN GAME PLAN... yes it is more of a game.
3. so called successful people r also generally saving their job .. so they r in no real position to help new people... most of the time ( PLEASE DO NOT USE AS AN EXCUSE for not helping )
Help and compassion are said to be basic Indian socialis society traits. Let us not forget them and use them.
bravo

what kind og IT job they have.
how many comnies r involved. did they give reference for each other. It may be that one of the got a good one and then pulled others in.. so a chain reaction started.
that is excatly i am writing about in my last post.
these candians do not know IT... atleast like we do..
Similarly we can find other fields like maths . literature . education system, skilled person search.. and form a chian reaction of job opportunity.
Basic ingredient neede is .. propensity to help others instead of jealousy, legpulling etc.
let me hope

although I think posting anything on this board is a fruitless excersise because of too many loosers who are more interested in discouraging others than analysing how they succeeded, I will make an exception for once.
Viks and Makapao have written very good responses. It is a fact that with passage of time all deserving immigrants do manage to find the niche they came here looking for.
Sadly what rshastry has written is very true in case of Canada. Most interviewers think that all 3rd world immigrants speak lousy english. It is indeed remarkable different in US where you are assesed on basis of what you are. However I dont think this perception in canada is because desis lack ettiquetes...on the other hand I think it is because of general perception of rest of world as poor, garish and medievel as compared to North America.
I know of a group of 8 people, from pakistan and India. All engineers with no IT background. Almost all worked as labourers, security guards initially. switched to IT and within 4-5 years, every SINGLE one found a solid IT job.
Thats a success rate of 100%.
But as they say it is very easy to blame the "system". There are way too many ppl on this board criticizing the CIC and the system childishly. Some have even used language that does not seem appropriate for a public forum like this or for an educated person. Canada only offers a visa to enter the country and settle here. It does NOT offer visa AND settlement guarantee. The worst are the bunch of fools that tell others not to come to Canada while sitting here all the time. Not only they deceive and discourage others, they end up deceiving themselves either.
once again let me point out for the intelligent ones.......ALL 8 PERSONS THAT I KNEW HAVE SUCCEEDED. IF THEY COULD, WHY WONT'T YOU?

Rajniminhas, Nobody here would deny that fact that networking helps. I agree with your post 101% percent that we need to help our people. Specially since all of us have been in situtations were we have struggled real hard while others are still going through it.

If I know someone well enough, I am more than happy to be a reference, or to forward any openings to that person in my company or even forward his/her resume directly to the hiring manager. I have done this in the past and would continue to do so.

But having said that there are a few more things that an individual needs to do himself in order to succeed...and blaming the system is certainly not one of that things. And I think thats where this discussion has broken off.
