What is Canadian Experience? Immigrants Puzzle!
By:

Many new arrivals to Canada and Toronto in particular discover that they cannot get an IT job as soon as they arrive - no matter their level of skill or experience. The reasons given usually center around language skills and lack of "Canadian experience".

What is Canadian experience?

Canadian experience usually means having experience interacting with people in the context of the culture found in Canada. Every culture is different. For instance, relationships between supervisors and sub-ordinates vary from culture to culture; and country to country. And Toronto is the most cultural diverse city in the world!

How can I get Canadian experience without a Canadian job?

Getting Canadian experience without a job:
Volunteer. Volunteering for a charitable or cultural organization will help you to get Canadian experience and references.

There are many charitable and cultural organizations in Toronto and across Canada that need volunteers.

When you volunteer you are working. And you have someone that you will report to - a supervisor. You work with other people - usually in English.

The end result is that you gain Canadian experience. Experience that provides you with practical experience about the culture. Practical experience in speaking English and learning the local idiom, expressions, etc. And you gain References - from the person or persons that supervized you; and the people that you work with.

How do I find a charitable organization?
There are a number of groups in Toronto that can direct you to charitable organizations that need your help and in turn can help you to gain Canadian experience.

The Possibilities Project is a great place to start looking. http://www.possibilitiesproject.com/

How come people from Korea, Hong Kong or Romania dont work in factories while we have to?

thats not tru!! !!!
Quote:

Because all these people bring money with them, they arrive and relax, upgrade their skills develop networks and then land a good job after a year or so.

too bad ... then why dont indians get money and develop networks skills!!!
pls no one likes a cry baby

Quote:

If you compare the skill set of Indians with those Romanians and East Europeans ...Indians really standout having better English skills and Technical abilities.

They still find it difficult to get acceptance....becoz of cultural and color difference......

NO! its becoz they are sotually lallos when it comes to selling themselves in the interview. I've interviwed desi ppl ... and trust me no matter how skilled you are the empoyer will NOT HIRE YOU UNLESS HE/SHE believes you can fit into their corporate environment.

I wont hire a desi if i smell curry from his clothes no matter how techie he is .....peirod.

Quote:

East Europeans succeed here not becoz they upgrade their skills or networking......WHITE SKIN color is accepted here.......Have you ever seen White Guys.....unemployed ...wandering for jobs ???????

again its abt marketing. this country is based on marketing and networking skills... too bad if u aint got any. Dont complain and beat up the nation for that.

There are plenty uneployed white guys around ..haven u hread or visited trailer parks!?!

Quote:

Please take it in the right sense as this is the "REALITY"
Deep

Im kinda sick of you complainers!! first no one asks you to come to canada, secondly this was your choice, if u cannot fit in this place then that does not mean this place is bad.

there are plenty of coloured and south-asian ppl in big positions... look at directors and president's of various banks such as RBC, scotiabank... etc!!

Each of one of us in this place has the ability to go where we want to but we need the right people skills for that and not every migrant has that.

OH YEA!?

explain please?

why wud i send out a tech to do desktop support call if he smells curry? If I am a team leader of a group I want to give a+ service to my clients....which includes not just a skilled job but a A+ presentation too.

when the technician leaves the desk i want the clients pick up the phone and tell me what a great job the guy has done in fixing their PC . I DONT want people to pickup their phone and start a gossip abt the new indian guy hired who smells like curry.

the canadian dream is not going to walk in your people's home and ask you accept it ... you HAVE to endavour to reach the standard where you can demand what is rightfully yours.

my 2 cents.

Because People eat food they dont put it on as a perfume.

In my time I have never seen people smell of any type of food. When they are eating the food has its own aroma be it burger, Indian, chinese etc...It doesnt smell when they are not eating it.

Get it????

Smell of Indian Curry, right....

Viks, that line "Indians smelling of curry" was a quote I used to find on IRC, many years ago. Can you elaborate what that means ? I dont understand how a person who has eaten ummm say Palak Paneer + Keema Mutter + Biryani (spicy dishes) will smell of curry ? The only smell that can emanate from the desi is if he speaks and by shear bad luck he has BAD BREATH or did not RINSE HIS MOUTH properly. So you mean to say, you wont hire a DESI who has BAD BREATH or who doesnt RINSE his mouth ? :newangel:

Im surprised with your comments. its like u guys dont really kow what im saying.

nobody is going to smell your clothes but with the typical indian cooking at home the clothes do have an odour unless u are one of those you regularly burn scented candles at home and keep the curry odour away from your kitchen and home.

Are you not fammiliar abt this new concept of families moving their kitchens to the basement to avoid this odour problem in the house???

If you still dont understand what im talking about then do not bother because someone who doean't know his clothes have an odour will probably not believe it either coz you are living in that environment 24/7 and therefore get used to it.

Just be a little open minded for now.
