I would like to start a new thread and invite other CDs to post their experience and suggestions.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE EXPERIENCE QUOTED BELOW IS MY OWN AND BEFORE YOU DRAW INFERENCE AND ACT ON IT, PLEASEEEEE MAKE YOUR INQUIRY. I QUOTE MY EXPERIENCE IN GOOD FAITH AND HOPE THAT OTHERS WILL SHARE THEIR EXPERINCE SO AS TO GUIDE OTHER CDs.
The ministry of finance posts many jobs at entry and intermediate level. Typically for all government jobs in accounting/finance, highest numbers of vacancies are at entry level and higher positions are filled up by internal promotions.
It has been my experience that for entry level job, the requirement is CGA level 3 and upwards. I did my CGA qualification within shortest possible time thinking that it will help me get in to Government job where though pay scales are not very good, there is job security. However, I have never been called for interview! Usually when job posting is notified, I contact other CDs to encourage them to apply for the same. We are now group of 10 to 12 CGAs who share this information. I observed that many other CDS in this group were called. On further observation we realized that those who get their designation as CGA were not being called for the interview.
This is a great dilemma for CDS as industry (private sector ) want CGA designation while ministry do not call them for interview. One thing which I find most disgusting is that those who get selected for the job, ministry reimburse their education fees to complete CGA! The ostensible reason for not calling the CGAs is that they are “over qualified” but my opinion is that it is CDs who pass most CGA exam at the first shot and believe me we are not stupid that we apply fr ministry job at entry level. The reasons are obvious. CD CGA are paid 30% to 40% less than white guys ( please refer statistics Canada site if you have any doubts) but this is one more smart(?) way to discriminate against CDs. So there is window of 1.5 years before getting final designation as CGA. I believe that CDs can make use of this period to get in Government job. The other option is to file a case against ministry with Human rights commission or in court but which is not PRACTICAL in my opinion.
Please let me have your experience.
