hi guys.. went thru all the messages on this BB and got a lot of info and links to other useful sites.. thx a lot.. already feel like I know everything abt Canada ..have been to Canada on visitor visa last yr to attend my frined's engagement ceremony in Toronto.. ..am in US right now on H1 and in same situation like many others who r thinking if should move to Canada or continue in US.. from what I get from ur replies it is better in US as more job opportunities here (for IT) and more savings too.. other things like quality of life, weather (atleast for me), food etc are pretty much the same in US and Canada.. offcourse the above opinion may vary from person to person.. but just coz it is tough to get work easily in ur field initially doesn't mean that people on H1 here shouldn't apply for Canadian PR.. getting a US GC is becoming increasingly difficult and taking more time so it wouldn't be a bad option to go for Canadian PR as a back-up which is also taking time now but atleast u can file for it on ur own.. and I agree it won't be smooth to get ur first ideal job in Canada but isn't it tough in US also now seeing the way jobs are being outsourced and the sluggish economy (it did fare better this quarter though.. signs of good times to come hopefully).. plus u have the dual citizenship now so can work and live in Canada/US/India and enjoy all the benefits once u become a Canadian citizen if not US..
pls correct me if I have mentioned anything wrong above.. and now to some questions which I couldn't find answers for -
1. I have submitted my passport and photos to the Los Angeles consulate 2 weeks back and should be getting it back this month.. guess I have time till May 2004 (1 yr from date of medical) to claim my PR after which it will be void.. pls confirm.
2. I assume to get my PR will have to go to the Niagara border (ideal for me) where they will give it to me when I show them my passport with the stamping from LA consulate.. by the way what stamping are they gonna do on my passport?.. would the PR that I get on the border be permanent or temporary?.. if temp then how long for permanent PR?
3. Once I get PR on border can I return to US immediately? or have to enter Canada and stay for sometime before coming back? if so how much time? do I need to apply for SIN and other stuff during that time? if yes then what minimum things need to apply for like SIN.. before returning to US? will need to show a Canadian residence?
4. When I come back to US do I need to worry abt taking care of anything back in Canada like taxes etc? I know some people work here but regularly go to Canada on weekends or other days to keep their PR alive (2 out of 5 yrs).. is it 2yrs continuous or ok with breaks?
5. Can I work on H1 in US even after becoming Canadian citizen or only option is TN?
6. I believe u get the Canadian passport only after becoming citizen right? till then u have the PR card.. so basically u are citizen of India, resident of Canada and working in US
that's it for now.. ciao.
thx.
AG.
Hi Guptaak,
The reason you didn't get any answer is you put this in wrong forum. You have to put your question in "Ask the expert" section. Our immigration expert answers questions asked in that section.
But I am surprised to see no responses from H1-B to Canadian PR Convetors
