Hi meghal i recomond you please read the link

http://www.ivu.org/news/march2000/hinduism.html

Interestingly enough, the word "Hindu" is not actually found anywhere in Vedic scriptures.

You are absolutely correct. Basically Hindu is not a religion. It is a world came into existence thousands of years later particularly created by Muslims to name the way of life the residents of trans-Sindhu geographical area were leading. The peoples of this part had various religions/beliefs such as Jain, Buddha, Shaiv, Vaishnav etc.

Some of you may feel I have digressed from the topic. But I would like to think beyond instructions of Vedas, Bhagwat Gita and various religious article on vegetarian diet. Why mankind is the only mammal on this planet consuming milk in raw form thru out life span. All mammals once strong to feed on their own do not require milk. Reason of asking this question is that, milk is a product from animal. Vegetarism ask to avoid in-take of animal products. Why milk has been given an important place in vegetarian diet.

I did not understand what you want to say. How does meat harm your body unlike milk & why are we busy removing fat from milk if it did not have any substance that is harmful in exces to body.
As far as I know, vegetarian food is being adobted by western meat consuming population is for fibre. Fibre is not available in milk. Milk being a product of animal, why it has been accepted in religion. Why we bath idols with milk before prayer. If we go by the nutrition values, garlic and onion have substances required by body, not available in any other food form. Why they have been kept away from vegetarian food list.

I think what Manasvi means is that you don't have to kill a cow or a goat to get milk from them.

Its a very personal choice and the definition of being vegetarian differs. Some people consider fish as vegetarian. Vegans won't even touch cheese cause its made from milk. A Canadian colleague once told me she was vegetarian (seriously) while eating a pepperoni pizza (she thought you're vegetarian if you eat a lot of vegetables which she had recently started! :) )

To each his own. One thing for sure though, vegetarianism (at least occassional) is fast growing in North America. The obvious reason is the associated health benefits. Walk into any supermarket now and you'll see a whole section full of vegetarian hotdogs, pepperoni, burgers etc. etc. (all made out of soya). All company events I have been to here now have vegetarian options. This wasn't the case 6/7 years back.

Without getting into any religious issues, let me answer your questions based on my opinion and understanding,

Manasvi was saying that milk should be acceptable within vegetarianism because it does not cause any harm to the animal (cow or goat) if a human being drinks it, unlike meat.
The animal has to be slaughtered for the meat, but not the milk.

You raise a very important point about man being the *only* animal that drinks another animals milk.

Also, this practice of drinking other animals' milk started only a few thousand years ago, with the dawn of the agricultural age and the domestication of animals.

Prior to that, man's diet was mostly hunted (game) meat, small insects, some roots that weren't poisonous, occasional seasonal fruits and seasonal vegetables.

This diet was available only to the man's ancestor from the Savannas - the species that evolved in the cold, frozen regions of the Arctic (like the Inuits) did not have any fruits and vegetables.
All they survived on was meat and fish (when available).

After man became "civilised" and domesticated other animals, the practice of drinking milk started.

Removing fat from the milk is a very harmful practice, and has started only a few years back due to all the low-fat and fat-free craze.
There is fat in the milk for a very good reason.
By removing fat from the milk, the manufacturers are basically rendering the milk useless.
Milk without the full fat provides no nutrition - it is as good as white powder, which is why you see all manufacturers adding synthetic vitamin A and D in commercial milk.

That said, milk is an extremely nutritious food.
Most people drink either cow's milk or goat milk in the "civilised" world.
However, in traditional cultures, natives drink the milk of several other animals.
For instance, reindeer milk is supposed to be highly nurtitious and the hunter-gatherers of Sibera used to drink reindeer milk to provide them adequate nutrition during the winter months.

The natives in the Arctic drink seal milk - this may freak your out, but seal milk has the highest fat content - which is so necessary in the harsh, extreme climates of the Arctic.

The reason the Westerners are missing fibre is because of all the processed junk food they eat - not because of non-vegetarianism or vegetarianism.
With junk food, fibre is the least of your worries because you are not getting any other nutrition either.

Quote:

Because it is like a fountain of life.
True milk (not the fat-free, pasteurised, homogenised, white powder you get in grocery stores) has so much nutrition that it cannot be ignored.
In a vegetarian diet (not a vegan diet, which doesn't allow milk), it provides vital nutrients which are not otherwise available.

Quote:

It is wrong to keep those out of the diet.
They provide vital anti-oxidants to the body.
Have you ever noticed that when someone is running a flu or a seasonal cold/allergy, how effective ginger, garlic and onions are in providing relief?
That ought to tell you that these "root" vegetables have some very important nutrients in them.

Since I am a vegetarian, I am asked this question again and again "Don't you eat any meat? How do you get any protein? Do you eat fish? Do you eat tofu"?

I find that some people ask this question genuinely. They really don't know. Others are just toying with you. For them, my answer is "One bag of Tostitos everyday"
