I want to ask something just out of curiousity. Since, US is going through a recession with no sign of reformation in a near future, is it really worth the time and effort to land up a job in the States, and eventually apply for Green Card? I mean, if the future is really uncertain down South then why people (especially in IT) still want to move? May be I am missing something here. Isn't being in Canada a safer bet nowadays? I am in IT so very much aware of the US Market, but still unable to comprehend the fact that professionals are spending their much valuable time, money, and resources to move to a country which hasn't yet come out of the recession, even by one bit. Doesn't an uncertain future jolt these professionals? I read about the US lay-off stories day in and out. Doesn't this fact pose any deterrent? Is US still an attractive place/market with all the prevalent uncertainties?
Please enlighten, or don't if you think I am being digressive.

-- In general, the "bad" news about the US should be viewed just like viewing news about Canada being a land of opportunity.
In my opinion, there is a mismatch between supply and demand. My company still can't fill couple of highly technical engineering positions. One particular reason in tis case might be the requirement to relocate. I still get calls from recruiters from lean, six-sigma, black belt positions (from both US and Canada). I think a lot of layoffs and unemployment, unfortunately, exists at the blue-collar level and they are ones who would find equally difficult to get back on track due to their limited skill set.

Dimple2001
I second Dimple2001 completely. From what I believe for professionals the unemployment rate is below 4%. I am talking about people in the regulated professions.I work in a rural community and surprising number of well qualified Ontarians who are qualified to work in the regulated professions have all immigrated to the US.(Everybody who have a degree in Physio or Engg or Nursing have packed their bags)
To answer Febpreet questions I would not be surprised that there could be at least 700k - 800k applications in total pending to file I485 in EB2 & EB3.I would definitely like to do more research on the number of applications who are waiting to adjust status and will update this posting.I know that at least 1,00,000 students are leaving India each year for their graduate programs in STEM areas.
Of late I see so many Indians working in convenience stores and gas stations who are persuing certification and non degreed programs on study visas. Why would students persue these educational paths and spend so much time and money when there is no formal path to Canadian residency. Is the CDN govt handing out PR cards to folks who come here and do certification and non degreed courses in International Business and Communication etc.
1>I went to school in Omaha,NE. Rent for a great two bedroom apartment with a swimming pool and beautiful garden was $550.00 in 2000 and today it is only $650.
2>In 2000 as a graduate assistant my income was $15k / year for a 20 hour work week. I know technical trained foreign educated professionals in Toronto who probably make the same money in 2011 and pay three times the rent in Scarborough.
3>Car insurance is probably $75 full coverage or lower even today for a 6 year used Japanese vehicle.
4>Even today UNL in state tution is only $2500 per semester for and you knock of 30% when you file your taxes.

With prices like this I probably do you even need a great paying job.I could be a full time university research assistant for life (:-))
