Anyone using Stevia or Splenda?
I am seriously thinking to switch from sugar to one of the two, for preventive purposes (due to family background). Basically for coffee only since I drink tea without sugar. Being a south indian, I drink coffee couple of times a day. Hate to drink without sugar. So, seriously thinking to switch to Splenda or Stevia.
Any thoughts or experience?DIO

Splenda (actually, sucralose) and Stevia are completely different things.
Stevia is a herb used by Japanese and Chinese to sweeten certain things.
It is not really a sugar substitute.
A lot of people don't like the taste or it, and it cannot be used for baking, etc.

Sucralose is a chemical sweetner made by processing sugar.
It is several times sweeter than table sugar.
However, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the safety of sucralose.
A lot of people have reported severe reactions and other side affects.
Please do a Google search for "Splenda dangers" and it should bring up several articles.

In the end, you need to make your own decision on what to use.

I suggest try Stevia and see whether it is palatable for you.
Consider Splenda only after you have fully researched and understood its potential risks.

BTW, cutting out 1 or 2 tsp. of sugar a day in your tea and coffee is not going to decrease/increase your risk for diabetes, as others have pointed out.
If only it were that simple....

Can I ask a dumb question?

Just because you are south indian..why does that mean you drink coffee..

do north indians just drink tea?

Im canadian...do I drink beer? (no i dont)

hehe... im sorry.. i couldnt resist

why are preferences related to country/regions of origin?

*ponderings*...

The question aint dumb - but the fact is that South Indians mainly drink coffee and not tea, while north Indians mainly drink tea - they drink coffee at times which is more social.........or how to put it........when they specially want to drink coffee, unlike tea, which is out of habit.

I can answer your question if you clarify what does generalisation mean - or rather what percentage of a statistical sample giving a specific result would you need to make a generalisation acceptable?

I dont have a response for the latter, however my question was - how can it be possible to make the statement that all south indians love coffee. Is it in their culture?

im curious but also just being a brat today :D

And where does the word all come from?????????

to satisfy the curiosity of a brat, one has to be constantly responding till the time she lays to rest!:D
