It is a documentary that is shown on CBC. You can watch it anytime, if you have access to ROD.

RCMP is doing nothing. Such ppl give out culture and ppl are bad name.

RCMP or CSIS did not do anything even in Air-India bombing. Neither did Indian police do anything in this case. BTW, IIRC the girl's father is mentally unstable, and so she was living with her mom at her "mama's" house. So it was the "mama" behind all this wrong doing. BTW, I wonder if those guys have any emotional ties with India. They would consider them 100% Canadian

There seems to be a misconception amongst us here that HINDI MOVIES is our culture. I have 2 children and they know about our scriptures and they understand our language and I know that as they grow up they will also want to speak it. but I do not encourage Hindi movies because not only do most of them teach poor and foul language but also wrong Ideas.

Hindi movies are NOT Indian culture. Hindi movies hardly portray the a real Gujarati or a real Bengali or a real Tamil. It is full of steroetypes.
But if you stereotype Hindi movies for poor and foul language, then you really need to watch good Hindi movies to change your opinion.

I do not think, any of my predecessors would have asked to get me killed, if i married against their wishes

I think the key is that we should teach our children what we think is best and then let them choose their own lives they have to fly out of the nest somday and we will not be there always to help so they need to learn by making their own mistakes.

i agree with you on this and the story u narrated was horrifying... killing ur own child or killing ur son in law whom ur girl is happy with, is a CRIME! and its a bigger crime than juz going and killing someone else....what happens to the bonding, emotions, how can these people spoil the happiness of someone whom they've created with so much love and adoration and instilled so much throughout their lives what happened to "bachchon ki khushi mey hamari khushi"

No matter what the environment, what the society some people never grow up as in "maturity".... and i'd like to add there's nothing related to being educated here too. Good intellectual people do these crimes. This is about being fanatic.... the link recently posted regarding another killing for getting married in the same gotra was equally shocking. Atleast the parents hired someone to kill, in that case, the bride's father did the courtsey himself with the help of neighbours! (idiotic neighbours i must say to support on such a cause!)

My second cousin is married to a guy from a different religion....this might be a shock to those who dont consider even inter-caste marriages. And God Bless both of them, they're blessed with a li'l boy and are very happy...

I'd just like to say its not any particular religion which supports all these barrings on their children its an individual thinking.... or a past which the parents hold themselves.... It grows with generations. At times the satisfaction or unsatisfaction speaks... lets say a child who never went to a coed school was always nagged if she (he) spoke to a guy (gal) or received a phone call (and the dad picked!) would create a different outlook towards life and implement the same on her (his) kids UNLESS she's (he) much intelligent to try fight her (his) parents to never interfere with her (his) own kids. yet the "unless" is a very rare case as the child grows up being convinced with that staid thinking......and gradually believes it to be right.

But a child whose growing in a free environment would ofcourse have a generation further whom she'd (he) be more amiable with.... as u pointed out Janmeja, the relationship with ur own father reflects something u try to be for your own kids today and mebbe somewhere better than that too !

No one can stop this..unless the individuals try and make a change in themselves, and i bet that is very impossible coz such stuffed people would hear "no nonsense" as they're ALWAYA right!

juz my 2 cents...... (more than 2 i guess ;) )

Get out from Indian/Chinese ghettos and live some nice open free space. Here in NJ, I notice in one apartment complex that few Indian ladies are sitting in front of swimming pool wearing sarees and making sweaters. A new definition of what you can do with swimming pool chairs. After some time the management put a board of appropriate dress for swimming pool.

Experience different food/travel/interact/meet/go out/have friends from different culture/countries who you feel are nice/educated/safe. Try to make your kids and wife comfortable with swimming/karate/ English music/go out for English movies. Take wife for so called date so she feels special. When there is communication gap or kids feel that you don’t understand what they want to say then problem starts.

If you come from Jalandhar or Madras and live with same people with same thinking and everyday same stupid discussion than you may land up with same confuses state of mind even after living many years in US/Canada.

This is my personal thinking. It does not mean that living in ghettos is bad.

whats wrong in wearing sarees and making sweaters in front of swimming pool...? Drinking bear and messing the pool is legal right???

If the pool isnt occupied and its winters as it seems to be the case for women making sweaters...then whats the harm in it

There is nothing wrong what you wear.

But sitting on swimming pool chair in summer and making sweater or making mess with pool by any way (putting beer) is wrong.

Here question is not legal right but common sense.

there is nothing wrong in wearing sarree or salwarkameez. its just that those things have got associated with ppl who live ere and dont widen their horizons. i have an aunt who has been in US for 52 yrs and wears only sarrees but she has dauter-inlaws and sons in law who are americans white. they are truly intergrated. they teach their children about their culture but not force it on to them. they welcome all ppl in their family.

we as INdians want to be accepted here that ppl should respect us but are not willing to accept and welcome them into our homes. . I think that is what rahul and ashish30 mean. Wr can have an Identity inspite of mixing with other cultures. If we open our homes they too will welcom us well.
Sombody once said : "dont pickup from the waistpaper baskets of the world " we like to make up our accents , and all wrong stuff. I am sure there is alot of good here . why not take that and integrate it with the good in our culture . rather than regect everthing blatently.
