Slightly over 1 billion each. Both ambitious, both industrious, both intelligent and talented.

How come that over such a short span - from being the minnows of the games and being stereotyped as being good at badminton & table tennis alone...China finishes just 3 Gold medals shy of USA's tally and 3rd overall behind the US and Russia. India come home with one silver medal...earned by a shooter in spite of the system and not because of it.

Is it a shame to represent almost 16% of the planet's population and finish 64th in the medal tally?

28 medals in 1988 in Seoul to 2nd position in Athens with 63 medals. Congratulations China.

We Indians however progressed infinitely better than you China: 0 medals in Seoul and 1 medal in Athens!!!!! Stunning.

Now explain all this to me - someone.

Without offence, just want to state that this one of the values of India / Indians - sports does not feature high on thier goals / ambitions / priorities.

Who supports olympians in china, (takes care of thier family /livelihood/training etc...) and compare with an aspiring olympian in India.

As I have observed athletes / Olympians in major medal winning countries are 'manufactured' that way at a very small age (an age that they may not even know much about olympics and sportsmanship), always pressured to 'win' come what may.

I dont intend to offend Big B in anyway, just one point of view to explain what he asked for... there maybe other factors too.

Hiren...no offence taken. Appreciate your points. they are well made and well taken as always.

Yes there is a manufactured element to athletes in many countries - true. But they do achieve pride for themselves and for their country. Yes there is pressure to win - but tell me - where in life is that pressure absent?

We pressure our kids to doing well in studies, tuitions, exams, grades, scholarships, entrance tests...so on and so foth...good job, een better spouse...so it is not that there isnt pressure in the absence of sport. I am sure that if we go into rural India and select people for certain sports an dthen train them - we will be able to produce amongst the best in the world and in turn offer the sprtsmen a better deal in life.

I do not buy the fact that sports is not a priority in India....we have merely made a mockery of it and politicians have intereferd in any sport tat we are good at for vested interests...

Come on how can sport not be in our blood...cricket has maniacal following whether or not we do well. We had a world champion in Badminton, Chess and Billiards many moons ago amd there was a time when other countyries comepetd as to who could have less goals scored aginst them by India --remember our natonal sport - Hockey?

We have sports training facilities across the country from Patiala all the way to Trivandrum...but infested wiht politics, quotas, preferential allocation...then the face about who goes for various games...we normally tend to have one official per sportsman.

But if you feel our priorities are elsewhere and that individuals and a nation cannot benefit by excelling in sport - then I stand corrected.

Sportmanship, playing in teams, the spirit of competitiveness and fairplay, and the attitiude of doing your best and then wishing that the best man may win are all integral values that we live our daily lives by. The olympics aside...in general - of course there will be excpetions - people who have played a sport in their youth tend to be better team players at work and later in life too.

But then enough of my ranting. Let us be proud that our skills are elswhere and that a billion of us cannot produce even 1 measly world class athlete.

Take care Hiren.

That is one thing I have thought about seriously........and want to do something about. I also have a plan, but cannot do it alone, and need help from others. Would you be willing to join me and carry out that plan.....ofcourse subject to you being convinced about the plan?

By the way, I have moved the thread to our native country.........from Canadian Sakhi, since even if Big B is a woman, the topic has nothing to do with Sakhi!

Here is the cause analyzed.

With an Indivisual's perspective.

To succeed and compete your potential needs to be recognized.
To be recognized you must show/demonstrate your potential /skill in a structred manner or in a competetion
To do that one must be selected for such structured competetions.
To Get selected one must have sufficient skills developed with rigorous practise in the respective line of the sport with proper methods and training which is often very expensive.
To get that extensive practise one must spend time with dedication and time and most IMP of all "Vitamin M". .

Which honestly 90% of the country's population does not have the required "Vitamin M" to spend and train their kids in sports beacuse of 1,2,3,..... N reasons, so basically it is mostly out of the lower and middle class masses where I think the talent is hidden but unable to come out to world.

Besides of the 10% who have money... does not think sports as a career option for the kids. ( Remember unless you take sports as a career one will never succeed. This can not be a part time affair.)

and even you if somo one tackles all these hurdles and come out with something, POLITICS ...... comes in the way... . which kill all aspirations and dreams in an athelete.

The Fortunate ones who are gifted enough to do something are in the present day sports,
but honestly they are NOT the most talented...... and NOT the best of the breed.

Another aspect. - from the Country's sports loving population view.

Just imagine - how many of us go and watch a Ranji trophy or Santosh Trph match or deodhar trophy match. we neglect them saying - ha it is a domestic one forget it. so the matches / competetions loose revenues and thereby further scope of investment in developing the sport.

where as you see countries like England and other EU countries and their love for the sport - They care more for local and national level events than the international events which are obiviously popular. we can clearly see the passion behind that.

So unless India / Indians start recongnizing the local talent and bring them up with proper care and attention and encouragement, we will continue to be at the bottom of listitngs on any sporting event.

Hope you are not getting bord with this hammering..

Come on...give me your plan and then we can surely take it forward. Maybe with the inputs of some of the others here (including myself!) , we can embellish it and make it one that will definitely succeed.
