It was not easy getting an apartment. I looked for ads on Internet and called a few Rental offices. When you go there, they ask you about your job and credit history. When you don't have either, they don't want to rent to you even when you tell them that you have the settlement funds with you. Minto refused to rent me an apartment. I had gone there alone. You should go with someone who has been living here for a long time. Then they are a bit careful in refusing. We went to see another apartment and we liked it. And this time with a friend. The lady couldn't refuse outright, asked me to fill the form but informed us that it is upto the head office to decide since we cannot provide proof of employment and credit history. Meanwhile, saw another apt and didn't like it.
Frustrated, made an appointment with Catholic Immigration Services and explained them the problem. The lady told me this is usual discrimination for new comers. But, she had a database of Land Lords who would rent to newcommer with settlement fund. We told them our preference for areas and located a nice apt for us and this time there was no problem. The bank statement showing the settlement fund was enough. Had to pay last month in advance and got first month free as well. After we signed the agreement, got a call from the other Rental agent informing that we have been approved.

So it has not been that simple. It is like that at each step initially. However breakthrough is always there, waiting for you.
Congratulations on the one little successful step.
