Lakshmi Singh is an anchorwoman in one of the public radios that I listen to. She says her name as "Lacshmi" as pronounced in the word "Lakhs" instead of the "ah" sound in Lakshmi.

It is one thing if others mis-pronounce her name...although not quite acceptable, but tolerable. However, I feel she could say her own name the right way. After all it's her identity.

Singh's mother is Puerto Rican, her father is from Trinidad. Could this have anything to do?

Any thoughts?

Hmm...

Did you see the movie "Salaam Namastey " if not please do so.
this case reminds of the movie where Preiry Zinta's name ( in the movie ) is always mis-spelled / pronounced by one and all.
Amber - A, A for Amber NOT Humber . . :D :D , this is a smash hit part of the movie.

In Trinidad and South africa all desi names ar missspelled. This happened 100 years ago when their ancestors reached there as indentured labourers and were uneducated. So when they told their names to the British agent for registration purpose , the British clerk used any spelling which sounded like the name.

Nobodys to blame

"I always ask that of all my prey."
"I just like the sound of it."

Agreed.
You will find many "Ram-Paul" in place of "Ram-pal" :)

I know a friend of mine - Shiva. But even few desi's call him Ci-va
American alphabet do not have "Sh", they have "S" and "C" (Unlike Indian languages)

Can be. Even kids born or brought up in India pronounce their name in Canadian style, not Indian style.

I heard a girl called "Kamini" say her name as in "kamini" rather than "kaamini". She might not be aware, it is a swear in Hindi. (kamine-kutte, main ter khoon pee jaoonga)

Interesting. :)

I have heard my dad say once there was a guy whose name was Jaganathan V Poolangudi. He later became Jack V. Poola.

Can't blame the guy for shortening it creatively :D

During the good old era of Ellis Island immigration into US, people have shortened their last names. One of my friend whose last name is now Grant, used to be Granati (Italian) for his great grand father.
