Hello guys,
Good morning. I have been following your posts in canadian desi and i would be glad if you could help me out with my situation.
Recently i became a canada PR few months back in febrauary 2006. I have been living here in toronto as a doctoral degree student for the last 5 years and have been to US once for a conference on visitor visa (this visa is expired now).
Recently when i became a PR, i went to rainbow bridge, niagara falls to complete my formalities to become PR of canada. The canadian immigration authorities asked me to go to the USA side to get a " letter" to complete my formality as landed immigrant of canada. When i went to USA side (i did not have a US visa), and told the US customs that i wanted to land in canada and the CIC asked for a letter from US side. The US customs then issued me a "refusal or denial of entry letter" with my name and no reasons were given on the letter. Also my passport was not stamped with entry denied.
I came back to canada and gave the letter which US customs gave me, to give back the canadian authorities and completed the landing process.
Now i want to apply for US visitor visa for a confrence shortly. When i was trying to fill out the visa forms, there were two questions.
1. Have you ever been refused entry to US or....?
2. specify the time which you were there in US?
What do i fill in for these questions. Should i mention about the time i went to US for landing purpose??
I also wanted to know whether the process i underwent will affect my process of getting future US visas??
Could any knowlegable persons or moderator clarify what i need to fill in the forms??
Iam so confused now and any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
I don't understand what they meant by letter. Generally to change ur status you have to go out of the country. Thus you go to the American side, at the customs tell them you are turning around right from here as u have to re-enter. They will let you do that, or generally there is a turning point before the customs of US from where you go back to Canadian customs and complete the formalities of change of status.
I don't thk you should have a problem, specially if it's not on ur passport.
That's all I know about it. Anyone else can spread some more light on it.
I think i have to be clear here. The CIC authorities asked me to specifically get "refusal letter from US side", otherwise they cant complete the formalities.
I presume then it shouldn't be a problem. Wish I knew more about immigration matters to help you on this. Maybe call up CIC and talk to them about it and they can help shed some light on this, because calling US immigration help desk would cost a lot as they use those 1-900 nos.

Hi Torontoboss,
What you did is a standard procedure followed by thousands.
You can mention something like,"For landing purposes in Canada, went from Canada at Rainbow Bridge, Niagara to collect letter of Denial of Entry from US post to return to Canada to complete Permanent Resident Landing formalities. This was done on advise by Canada authorities"
Nothing wrong and no negative marks for that.
Do not try to hide it. Just state it as it is.
You should be fine. Just keep your documentation complete.
Best of luck.
Hi LD,
Thanks for the info. Should i mention "yes" to the question, have you been refused admission to USA.
I appreciate your help.
