With foreign students allowed to work off campus...does it mean that there is a shortage of workers ? Or is this just to fill up odd jobs?

What are the prrospects for immigrants or foreign students who finish advanced degree programs from Canada? Do they also play the waiting game like newly landed immigrants?

As far as i know, students are allowed to work off campus mainly to encourage international students to come to Canada and pay high fees to study. It has nothing to do with shortage of labour or helping students financially.
UK, Australia, USA etc.. are better destinations for study based on many advantages and the Canadian univ's want to make Canada a more attractive destination for intl. students.
I donot want to discuss the rest of the points in your post. Maybe some other CD member will be glad to do so.
On a positve note , i will only say that once you finish a good degree in a good univ. here, your prospects to get a good job is more than freshly landed immigrants. Another + point will be the networking got in your university by way of students, alumini and professors.

We just hired a desi student who is on his way to complete his masters. He came on a student visa and got his PR few months back. He was given financial aid in the form of RA /TA.
(we are paying him around $18/hr to develop web pages)

Dear K,
I read ur messages on this thread. I think ur right.

I came to canada last year with an engg&MBA froma top Bs chool in India. I am 45+ with 20 yrs international work experience. Got a job in canada as a Salesperson , but always thot canadian TOp degree will give a boost.

Gave a serious try last june and applied to the canadian #1 EMBA program. A fter a great deliberation I got accepted by this #1 B-school in canada. Andthe funds( student loan) got finalised in 1 week thru a bank.

I will be joining the prestigious programme this year with an oblective of laerning the latest skills , network with top canadian managers and get into the great alumni network.
Du u think I am doing the right thing???
If nothing works here u can go back to asia/middleeast with a canadian top degree & citizenship certificate , which can give u a boost( 4 times to 5 times what u may get as an Indian).

ur comments gentlemen!!!

That is the spirit. Keep it up. Many immigrants donot have the patience/time / resources to do a full fledged course due to various reasons. I am glad that your situation is otherwise. I wish you all the very best. Your attitude can get you the right/ good job.

"You have done an amazing thing what many people have failed to do (including me)".
My field already requires lots of study to sustain and it doesn't leave much room for seeking another University based education... Ooops.. I still wanna do atleast after a year of experience in Canada and secure OSAP.

Good luck..
