Hello, everyone!

I'm moving back to Canada from the US and have some items that I will be shipping back via UPS. I've been doing some research on "goods to follow" but I'm a little confused.

1. I will be driving back to my home city which will take aprox. 6 days!
2. UPS shipping will take 4-5 days.

My question here is, what happens if these items arrive before I do?? Will it be held until my arrival? And if i do arrive before the delivery, how does customs know these items are classified as goods to follow?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Normally i do not know abt CANADA or USA procedure (UPS), but according to my knowledge the cargo agent will inform you as per your contact details mentioned in the air way bill but if they are not able to contact you then they will hold untill you approch for the cargo and will have to pay relevant airport storage charges for keeping your cargo at the airport.

Thanks for your reply. So really, what you're saying is that I need to talk to UPS :) I'm just scared of getting hit with hidden charges .... and since this is going to be ground delivery, the shipment will be held at a border crossing instead....I guess.

I moved from California to Montreal and used UPS ground to ship my household

PROS
1. UPS picks up the boxes from your house (if you arrange to be picked)
2. Rates are attractive

Cons
1. They don`t tell you that YOU have to go to customs to clear the shipment (They will let you know, when the goods have arrived, you can check the same by their tracking number; Generally customs holds the shipment for 5 days)

2. UPS canada does not have clue, as to how to proceed further, once you have your goods reached customs ( you have to drive down to customs office, Show them the goods to follow list and the custom`s officer will clear it for you. Custom`s officer will ask you to take the package, if you mention that UPS will pick that up for you, they drop the paper work in a UPS box, for the UPS delivery man to pick it up. Call UPS to pick the paper from customs and schedule a drop off at your new location. Mind you if you have boxes weighing more than 150 lbs, UPS delivery man will not deliver the box, he needs a partner to lift the boxes!!!. I went and collected my own box from the warehouse)

I had bad experience with them. Hopefully you don`t have to go through the same experience

Good luck

PS: It is nearly two months plus, they are still working on compensation package!!!

Ah, that is the answer I was looking for! :) Thanks, I've really been scratching my head on this one. I was at UPS earlier (their shipping center) and the guy down there had no answer for me.

All my boxes are under 100lbs, so I should be ok! In fact, I have about 13 boxes each weighing around 50lbs.

That's too bad they did that to you though. I really HATE fedex so I'm not going near them. And last I checked USPS likes to destory packages on route, so UPS is my only alternative.

Is it safe to assume they drop off your packages at the nearest customs from your home? I mean, these aren't going to show up at the Vancouver customs if you're moving to Montreal right? :)

Thanks again!
PS I have a sister in Montreal :p
