Be careful when you buy anything here in canada, the biggest part is when you buy something always consider delivery charges for big items.

often taxes and delivery charges together goes above the cost of product.
Spend your money wisely. Delay in delivery is another aspect, sometimes you will wait indifinately for most emergency purchases.

These are the tips you need to follow other wise even after spending money you will regret and not get things in time. This is canadian customer service. Hold phone for 20 minutes and that too in vain with just recorded and automated messages.

i am just sharing my experience, though it may not be so bad or so good. But it may help you in saving few bucks in your intial days in canada without waiting for the most emergency goods. Buy by yourself, get it delivered through your friends car or bring it by your own delivery arrangements.

In Canada, there are hidden charges and fees. Best example would be cellphone.

When you buy a $25 cell phone plan + caller ID, you actually pay $42 per month. There is GST, PST, system access fee, 911 emergency access fee. Oh, by the way there is one time programming fees and activation charges also. If you want the cell phone for free, sign 3-year contract. If you sign 2-year contract, then you pay this much. We will also keep one month deposit. If you pay your phone bill late, will report it to credit bureau. If you pay your bills on time, it will not be reported to anybody.

I feel most call centers are understaffed (may be), so long waits. Most of them are not 24 hours x 7 days, so you will have to call during day time, taking time off your work. Tired of waiting over the phone for customer service, I sent email to one company that makes computer printers and the response came 3 days later that did not answer my question. So, I had to send one more email.

I was never interested in buying things over the internet because when they will deliver between 9-5 on weekdays, most probably I will not be home at that time. If any problem occurs in delivery, then you will have to sit with phone, again between the hours of 9-5.

I have been here from last month. Today completed 31 days here in toronto and believe me in last month I have been running around to get basic things like phone, cell, computer, internet, rental house, bank account, furnitures, plugs, sockets, adaptors and believe me I am fed up with Canadin customer service. I have broke my head and life on holding phones pressing buttons, listening to recorded messages and automated emails and back to square.

Why do you talk of customer service in Canada, when you make
50000 phone calls in your canadian phone history 49000 calls goes to voice mails. and mostl of them are 1-800-xxxxxx which means nothing to a customer except reducing 30-60 minutes of his life per call.

to be fair, most of this is spelled out in any service contract... it may be in fine print, but its still spelled out... and at teh end of the day, its your responsibility to make sure you are not getting screwed...

as for tax, when people already know most products and services rendered in canada are taxed via gst (and optionally pst depending on where you live), i still dont get why people suddenly become surprised when they have to end up paying the tax?

It is fair?

Why do you need so many fees? One company would charge you programming fee and one would not. Simply because the market is small in comparision, they are trying to extract as much money as possible from customers.

Simply by telling you that $25 product will cost you $50, does it become fair?
