We have new experience at Holly Renfrew Calgary.
My wife was looking perfume/eu-du toilette then a very nice smart lady came to help us. She was hesitating to show/explain those expensive perfumes. She was Indian but here for long time I can see with her accent.

Then a white girl came and she start entreating her better and was giving more time to her and explaining her everything. That white girl asked few questions about those expensive perfumes and that shop lady did not know ans. Then my wife explained nicely to that girl.
After that white girl left and did not buy anything.

Then shop lady start talking nicely and showing all perfumes to us. My wife bought one perfume and that lady gave us some samples for other brands.

In the last she said “I apologies that I left you in the middle when other girl came”. Very few people buy these perfumes but they just come and feel it.

I was thinking what that was and why that happened even we were wearing nice clothes. We both can speak good English and living in North America from last 7 yrs. We have good taste and know lot about expensive stuff even we don’t buy them all the time.

Rahul,
Very few desi's buy expensive stuff and hence it is a natural tendency for Desi's working in high end shops to ignore Desi's (However nicely dressed you are). When coming to Whites, Desi sales people have difficulty in separating the rich from the poor and hence give equal attention to whites. It is a cut throat world and Desi's try to make the max. exploitation of it. In the free time, they would either be on the phone with family members or be taking rest.
If go to a store with whites as staff , you will see that they give equal attention to all be it Desi's, black or whites.
Desi people always think fellow Desi's inferior. You can see it from some of the sarcastic/ insulting replies that i get in this forum despite my attitude as not to insult anyone. They always try to redicule a desi at the first instant and they will show it to other desi's in real lives too.
Even in Desi shops/ restaurants, the owners will refuse to refund for a product bought by a desi but would happily do so in case a white wanted the same thing.
Another thing which Desi sales people know is that Gora's normally speak the truth. For e.g. in the perfume shop, the White lady might have said " Oh! This is expensive. I canot afford it" whereas a normal desiwould have said "Oh! price is very cheap. I will come in 1 hour with the money to buy it" and then never turn up or say "My spouse is outside, Let me come with him and buy the perfume" and then never show up. Maybe the Desi sales lady had previous experience with Desi's like this. So b'cos of all this , few genuine desi's (like you) get affected / insulted. It is hard for this attitude to change.
I am sure that more senior desi's can shed more light on this.

TK

While I dont agree with your generalizing statement that all desi's will go talk to their family members on the phone or take a rest (where did you get this info from), I do agree with you that I have seen and experienced poor service from desi's.

However, having said that, I have also experienced poor customer service from caucasians as well. Sometimes its that person's problem, not yours (ie the customers). It might be racism it might not be.

I dont think you can generalize that desi's dont buy expensive things. However I do agree that the impression is there.

I have been in customer service myself and let me tell you, "whites" dont always tell the truth, or more aptly, speak directly. It depends on the individual. It is not possible to generalize.

Thanks for your post.

MR,
I admit that i took it to a bit extreme but many Desi's (born and brought up in India for a significant period of time) will agree to my statement that we Desi's are a bit calculative and business minded.
There are whites who do the same thing but not to this extent.
I have found many Desi's literally crying to get a job and once they are in the job and while the boss is not watching do all sorts of immoral /Unethical stuff (incl. me). I have seen many whites in my office (who are not clever) come and try to do the work but canot do it and hence have to be fired.
I have seen desi's in gas stn's talk all the time on the phone, coffee shop employees eating food stuff from the store, labourers quietly packing stuff the office on to their bags, Project Managers stealing office old computers to their home etc...
Desi's work only when the employer watches or if theu have to meet a dead line or else they will be fired. That is the general trend. Of course , all this has a large percentage of error.
This is also due to the nature of Desi's. Desi's were brought to save for the future and hence you can see that each and every Desi saves atleast 20% of his monthly salary for a rainy day. He also is not very afraid to be fired since he knows that he has savings and can get another similar job in a month. OTOH,, Eurpoeans, Philipinoes and Americans spend 100% of their salary every month. They canot live withour Booze, meat and SXX. So their concept is like work 8 hrs. , Sleep 8 hrs. , Have fun 8 hours and before they relaise it they are 65 and are pensioners. Therefore they tend to be more hard working and stable in their jobs. They were not brought up in an atmosphere of cut throat competition and a survival of the fittest attitude as Desi's. We always see and work for the future. We always think of helping finacially our parents, grand parents, relatives and we work to educating our children and give them a better future.
Just my rant.

TK Antonsy saab ,

Your posts are a pleasure to read. few ppl speak from the heart .

My only humble addition is that could we attribute this also to the fact that desis have some inferiority complex. And they feel ' hey I have been here for 10 years , you are a newbie , I am superior to you .....' .Probably the same feeling NRIs feelw hen they return to India and flaunt their wealth .....

It does take a lot of courage to overcome this complex and talk with fellow desis in public in the same manner as you would speak with any white . I always try and do that , even in my own office but make it a point not to offend other whites by talking in our native language .If we have come to Canada , lets believe in equality of our own selves first and then the others as well .

I experienced the same lack of equillibrium with one particualr community in the Middle East .They would keep aloof and restrict themselves to their own community .
