Any opinions about Raleigh,NC ??

My brother lives in Raleigh and i have been to that place for around 30 days! Here is my opinion.
Raleigh is more a village than a town. The town exists only for SAS, Microsoft, Duke univ. and Univ. of NC. The Downtown has a few 10 storied office buildings and that is it. Downtown is composed of Blacks and is well known for crime and drugs. No one visits downtown. I visited downtown 3 times during my stay in at each time found 10 or more people drunk and unruly.
Raleigh is composed ot 2 towns, Raleign and Durham.
The SI population is very low and has one SI restaurant. Property prices are low but no one will come for rent.
It is in the bible belt and hence you canot purchase liquor in the Raliegh area (known as Wake county). YOu need to go atleast 50 Miles away to purchase liquor.
Raleigh is not even worth to be though when you are talking of Atlanta, Houston, SF area etc....
Personally, I would not go to Raleigh even if i got 60K salary as there is no life in that city. It has a museum in Downtown and that is it.
Taxes are 6.5 % (in2003)
For more details, Please PM

Sidenote : Average House price is low in this area but be aware that there will be literally no appriciation , whatso ever.

Research Triangle Park is right next to Raleigh. RTP has lots of hitech firms. RTP has the USEPA (same as Environment Canada here) headquarters. I know folks who live in raleigh but work in RTP.

I would go for Raleigh rather than Atlanta. Again Atlanta is a typical big city like Houston and with big city crime rate. In Raleigh, home prices are low. conservative whites, less crime, driving distance to sandy beaches and to Atlanta. U cant get everything in one city anyway.

4k to 5k per month as apt. rent? That's too high.

Nope - You can get a decent apartment starting from 1.5K and it may go upto 2.5K. Nothing more than that. Yes, if you want to buy a house it is very expensive.

Portland, OR should be good place. The taxes are very less in Oregon.

When you talk about crime in big cities like Atlanta and Houston you are correct about central city areas. However most middle class professional live in suburbs where the crime etc is not much worse than smaller towns. If you live in good middle class suburbs you should be fine
