Ok don't know how many of you guys are aware of the law regarding mismatched prices, but here goes.

How often have you gone to a store and seen the price marked at a price and gone to the check out counter and it is rung in at a higher price?

It happens to me every so often and usually all I do is bring it to the notice of the cashier and get a refund of the difference.

However yesterday at a well known big dept store, after a long wait at a line, 3 different items were rung in at a higher price and then to get it rectified the cashier told me to go to the customer service line where again I had to wait for a seemingly interminable amount of time. I got so upset that I decided to actually get the items for free by citing the law. The cashier at the customer service line was oblivious of this law. So I asked for the manager, who came out and was a desi, and was also oblivious of the law and wanted me to show proof that such a law existed and then added in Hindustani " Kyoon itna garbar kar raha hai, difference leke jao" . That got me even more riled, so I told him, no way, now I definitely want it for free. The son of a gun told me "Hul denga ko kuch nahin milenga- just take the difference, and stop making a scene- aisa koi kanoon nahin".
Hoo boy that was the end of him. I raised hue and cry until an experienced cashier came and actually told the dumb ass manager there was such a law and to please refund me the money. The manager held onto his word like a king and refused to budge. I wrote in a written complaint and followed up by going back today to the store and spoke to the week manager, a caucasian, who knew the law and not only refunded me the money for the overpriced items but also gave me a $50 store certificate for my inconvenience.
The dumb ass desi manager was there also and was fully apologetic for his behaviour.
Anyway, end of story here's the link should you need it. Why not - "free mein milenga maal pani"

I wasnt aware of this law.

Im sorry you had to be a 'squeaky wheel'

However its good that you stood up and did not let yourself be bullied!

Great job! Would you mind sharing the name of this dept store?

But isn't the free item up to a max of $10? You cannot get the item free or am I missing something?

Store's name is Walmart.

In my case, all items were priced below $10, so I got them for free, plus the $50 certificate for the inconvenience.

Had the item been more than $10, say shoes at 29.97, then I would have had to pay only $19.97 and so on.

It's been around since 2002, but I never exercised it either 'cos usually there is just one item and the cashier usually takes care of the refund and it's too much of a hassle to call the manager and have people give you dirty looks etc..

What got me bugged was that the prices were wrongly rung up on 3 items and the cashier actually told me she couldn't do anything for me and that I had to go to the customer service line, where again I had to line up, after being in line for some time to pay for my purchases, which is why I decided to exercise my right. Then on top of that I had a buffon of a weekend manager to deal with who actually had the gall to tell me I was a liar. I wonder if he would have been that rude with a Caucasian or a Jamaican.

Anyway, later today, after starting the thread, I also got a call from one of their customer care centres to apologize and guess what, to send me another $50 certificate!

Hey, I should kick up a ruckus all the time!

This is highly surprising that a manager at Wal Mart is unaware of this rule.

You go to any Grocery Store such as NO FRILLS or FOOD BASIC, at every check out counter you would see the rule promptly displayed on a Sticker.

I have used it only one time at a NO FRILLS store. Couple of other times when there was a price error, I just brought it to the attention of the cashiers and they checked the price and rectified the mistake.
