LONDON: The remarkable saga of UK's first Indian Miss Great Britain is seen to be something of a turning point for the country's 1.3 million-strong Indian diaspora.

The diaspora has, so far, punched above its weight in economic and educational terms but severely left British beauty pageants to more flamboyant immigrant communities.

Within hours of the Sun announcing its choice for Miss GB 2006, sections of the UK's Indian community told this paper it was "good. But it's hardly something that we can expect to have as a role-model for our daughters and sisters posing in underwear and so on".

The reference was to Desai's photographs in the Sun, clad in hardly more than pale diaphanous lingerie. The 5 foot 8 inch beauty now wants to pose for Playboy.

Desai's mother said, "When she was crowned Miss Great Britain she rang to tell me and said, 'The crown is for you.' I burst into tears. I felt as if I won that crown. I felt as if I am Miss Great Britain. She only wants to see me happy both my girls do."
