While Searching for Duty Free Baggage Allowance I came across these two sites. Worth Browsing in Free Time (not just for Baggage).

Travelling from USA, Canada ... and aged above 10 years ... stayed more then 3 days abroad ... you are entilted Duty Free Allowance of Rs 25000 + Used personal effects and travel souvenirs.

In the context of Baggage Rules for tourists, personal effects would include the following:
(i) Personal jewelry
(ii) One camera with film rolls not exceeding twenty.
(iii) One video camera/camcorder with accessories and with video cassettes not exceeding twelve.
(iv) One pair of Binoculars
(v) One portable color television (not exceeding 15 cms in size)
(vi) One music system including compact disc player.
(vii) One portable typewriter.
(viii) One perambulator.
(ix) One tent and other camping equipment.
(x) One computer (laptop/notebook).
(xi) One electronic diary.
(xii) One portable wireless receiving set (transistor radio).
(xiii) Professional equipment, instruments and apparatus or appliances including professional audio/video equipments.
(xiv) Sports equipments such as one fishing outfit, one sporting fire arm with fifty cartridges, one non-powered bicycle, one canoe or ranges less than 51 meters long, one pair of skids, two tennis rackets, one golf set (14 pcs. with a dozen of golf balls).
(xv) One cell phone.

... 25,000 Rs does not sound that much but with list of Used "Personal Use" Items it looks ok. But in any case, these days everything is available in India.

This info will help me while talking to those Butchers @ Airport.

***** I wonder where would Diapers fit in ???
- New Item, to be included in Duty Free Allowance of 25,000
- Used "Personal Use"

Max Canada allows is $750 translating into approx 29,000 INR, nothing on top. If you get caught they put duty on everything. My personal experience also, once I was selected for detail screening. Canada customs charged me duty on all my clothes to find out if I exceeded $500. The limit was $500 at thta time.

So I would say India is goog in duty. Frankly last year I had laptops, camera, microwave and I declared all of them and customs did not bother at all. Since 5 years every year I go pretty much same story. So stay cool and go.

You should be able to do a transfer of residence if you've been outside India for more than 2 years. This excludes items like cameras (not sure what else) from the dutiable list.

Not sure if the rules have changed - I did this around 4 years back.

I was never asked for any proof that I intended to stay in India. They didn't ask to look at my ticket or anything of that sort.
