If an international air passenger were to land in any Indian airport, he can claim an on-the-spot compensation of Rs 4,000 for delayed baggage, says Sudhakar Reddy, national president at Air Passengers’ Association of India. Reddy says the traveller must approach the airline’s help desk, and claim compensation after filling a baggage details form.

Any such thing for Canada?
In our case, one (out of two numbers) baggage was delayed by 48 hours; when my wife traveled from Beijing to Vancouver/ Toronto about three weeks back. The baggage was home delivered in Toronto after 2 days of her arrival.

I dont think this info is true
It depends on many things such as where the airline operates from for example asia, EU or NA
EU has best customer protection laws.
The compensation in only provided if both bags dont show up and often it has to be reimbusred later on by airline's office which means you spend money from your pocket first

This is not true.

I travelled to India (HYD) in June 2006, by (US Airways/ Lufthnsa ) via Frankfurt.
We had 8 checked in bags altogether, and the bags did not arrive with us.
So I did submit a misssing bagage report for all our 8 bags along with copies of out boarding passes and passports etc. ( this was as directed by the Airport staff there handling the baggages.)

And . We received Rs. 12000.00 on the spot, - And I DID NOT even ask the airport guys there. And I did not pany thing.

Most importantly, I knew very well that we will miss our bagages, as we boarded the connecting Intl flight literally "8 minutes" after the scheduled departure time,
At Charlotte Intl Airport, the US Airways flight was waiting for just 4 of us (our family), as our flight from NJ was delayed by 1 hr 55 minutes and we ran to the this gate without even bothering for the bags.

So may be the rules for compensation vary from Airlines to Airlines.

Hi Naudurivsm,

So you got INR 1,500 per bag (Not 4,000). How many days after your arrival (in India) did you received your bags. That is great of you giving attention and time to filling forms, getting the papers photostat at Frankfurt airport even when your flight from NJ was late by about 2 hours; and connecting flight was ready to leave very shortly.

Plz. Explain….And I did not pany thing….(you mean 'did not panic?')

Ben

Hi
First sorry for the typo. Yes I did not "pay" anything to Airport staff there.
I got the bags the next day by the afternoon evening by 3.00 PM, so close to 36 hours I think.
The rationale behind the "amount"given as compensation is that in an international travel the delayed baggages take at least 24-36 hours to arrive ( including the time to clear customs etc,(as they will open all bags check),

So they pay te amount as compensation to your and your family (meaning all travellers) sufficient money to maintain yoursleves with clothing food, and all incidental expenses ( including, lodging etc. )

I was told very specifically by the same officials that this is interim a per the airline rules and that If I produce bills later to show that the expenses during the lead time are more than the "interim" amount they reimburse all such expenses to me.

So I think they have some upper limits as well. But again it depends from airline to airline.

Hope this helps.
