Thanks a lot guys. I have been trying to implement some of the tips Sanjeev suggested. As I said before, he understands but doesn't reply in our language.
I do not believe in excess Hindiasim or anything; however, I do want my child to be able to communicate in our language when we go to India or our relatives come here. On the other hand, I do not expect him to read/write in the language. Moreover, it doesn't hurt if he learns an additional language besides English.
I guess, I have to employ different techniques to get him to speak in my language, as I do when I teach him Maths.
Thanks once again,
MG.

If someone grew up here (been schooling here) then his first language is English not Hindi. First language is not related to race or where you come from but it's in which you feel more comfortable and in which you think/talk alone. For me first language is mother language.

Mumbai Maazi Ladki ...
Its not difficult to teach Mother Tongue in GTA
There are many schools which conducts this Language classes every sunday.
If you are in GTA, its possible.
I know about classes for Marathi, Tamil etc.
Also by going this classes at least child will start talking
in own language.
The advantage of this classes are they start from Basic like grammer etc.
and its in happy environment & not forcefully
As some one says, best is try to speak more in own language at home
It helps

I don’t understand what is the problem if she/he speaking in English or responding in English. Do you think too much Hindiasim can be negative and how she/he takes it? Just trying to explore it, not pointing out wrong or right.
How many parents stretch to learn French or Spanish (mostly southern US population can speak) to their kids?
