Not really. We have opened and maintained joint bank accounts, joint investment accounts, bought 3 houses over the years, sold couple of them over the years, financed/leased cars (all of these in both Canada and US) processed Cdn PR apps and obtained it, became Cdn citizens, sponsored our son, etc etc. Did not face any form of hurdle at any point of time. Most of these were done as a joint application.

Anyway, it's upto the individual and his/her preferences. :)

Hi Icecube,

What Indian consulate is telling you is right and what febpreet is telling is also right. The only difference is that you are here in US and Febpreet's wife is in India and he is telling you what one does in India, that is the name change which requires affadavit, newspaper etc.

Since you and your wife are already in US you'll have to go via Indian consulate, to have a new passport in your wife's married name, this is also one way of changing one's name if one is not in India. For this change you'll have to show them your marriage certificate. In our case Indian consulate issued us marriage certificate also, we showed them our wedding pictures, the name of the place it took place etc.

Since me and my hubby traveled immediately after marriage, I traveled on my maiden name and maiden passport but got the new passport with my husband name in it from Indian consulate. This is simple and very easy.

Hope it helps.........................Jona

First and foremost, do what ever suits you the best.

If your wife is a "Lady with a qualification" and the certificates are issued under her 'Maiden Name', and those that will not be re-issued under the Married Name, then, do that is right. If she wants to work and be a carreer Lady and wants to hang all of the certificates with her professional name there in, it should be honoured and she should retain her maiden name. (When the lady marries after graduation)
Use XXX YYY or XXX Z. YYY, so that the passport will bear the name as in the Certificates issued, either straight forward, which is preferrable OR with a Z. as a middle name, with a slight twist to indicate that she is currently married.

If she is a staunch believer of being a housewife, then, XXX ZZZ OR XXX Y.ZZZ
to accomodate her maiden name, i.e. if you both desire it to be so.

If you believe in the "Double Barrel Shot Gun Name" then, Mrs. XXX YYY-ZZZ.
(Hyphenated)

Did I give a choice? Yes. Did I make it more difficult? Yes. You want to know the answer? Yes.!!!

First and foremost, do what ever you are comfortable with.

One thing you must remember most.... You are the HEAD of the Family. You want your children to bear Your Name and when you travel to-gether as a family, all your surnames will be the Same. So, go for XXX ZZZ. No complications at all in this.

Now. I know I know "It is as Clear as Mud". Right. !!!

Nice start for a Sunday.

Freddie.

For both of you:
1. You need your marriage Certificate.
2. You need your Birth Certificate.
3. You need your Degrees and Certificates associated with it.(Them)
You might have to publish your desire to do some changes, to accomplish all of this. Get them ready.

{ I have a plaque hanging in the kitchen which says: " I am the boss of this house and I have my Wife's permission to say so". Now you know where I
stand. By the by, I wear 'shorts' in the house.} F

Since she already has your last name as her last name, after the marriage, in her passport, you do not have to worry about it any more. xxx yyy zzz
Just to substantiate, (Proove it to them) that she is married to you, please carry a COPY of the birth certificate and the Marriage Licence with you, if some one questions you. You can show it to them.

You sir, do not have any problems.

Now have a good night's rest.

Freddie.
