Greetings,

A couple of questions for those who have recently renewed their Indian passports in Canada -

1. Do they return the original passport?
I ask because my passport has valid visas on them and I don't want to lose them.
I am assuming that the visas stay valid even if the passport expires - is that true?

2. Are there any issues with returning original documents?
I'm just nervous about sending originals of my PR card and other documents.

Why does the Indian consulate require originals of everything?
I am also filling out a PIO card application for my kids and I see that they require their original passport and original long-form birth certificate.
Why can't they accept notarized copies?
Do they believe that Indians in Canada are forging photocopies?

Hi Pratickm,

Based on helping a mother and child get their new Indian passports in Aug, the Indian consulate does indeed give/mail you back the old passports. In this particular case, both mother and child had valid US visas thru till 2009 and valid UK visas. Visas do stay valid even if passport expires.
There was no issue in returning the mother's passport and other original docs such as PR card.
In the case of the child, she had to go to the Indian consulate to verify her id as the photo in old passport was 10 years old and her new photo did not resemble her old one.
Don't know if this is the case for all children but it indeed says that the consulate requires the physical appearance of the child in the case the old photo does not match the new.
visit the link : http://www.cgitoronto.ca/ and click on passport services and scroll down to children passport section pt 5.

As to your 'rant', it wud b better to address these questions to the consulate, I think.

Just to continue on same topic

I recently renew my child passport in Toronto.
So Indian Consulate just stamp some where in middle pages about new expiry date( say after 5 years).
But on main front page expiry date is still old.
Is that the standard practice while renewal

I am asking this as anybody who first see passport will say its already expired unless check soem middle pages & confirm new expiry date

Any feedback

It used to be done earlier and i had my passport renewed with a similar renewal on page3-4. What they do is put the stamp in page 3-4 of your passport. These pages are specifically meant for additional information in your passport. The same is the case with change in address or change of maiden name, they will put it in page3-4or maybe even 5 . These pages are meant for that . In case they have put this on a blank page, normally where they put visa or a stamp, then you inform the embassy.

They do not change / overwrite on the front page of the passport.

Could you please provide a link to this one.

Good for you .... but this is applicable if....

"Minor children are NOT eligible for OCI in case both parents are Indian nationals"

That is possible.
What the website is saying is that kids of current Indian nationals cannot get OCI.
You are not an Indian national, but an overseas Indian citizen.

I read the text in red on the website. I never knew abt it. So minor kids of indian nationals cant get OCI.
But would they get PIO card?
