If any body can guide on following question Re: Stocks & Bonds held in India
I have been non resident for a considerable time. Over the period I have acquired few stocks (Nothing significant at all, one here and one there). Been thinking of disposing them off since the valuation may be attractive. Some stocks have been acquired as a non resident while others as a resident. Lately I have heard that now all the stocks in India viz in Bombay have been “Demat”
A) What does this mean and B) how does one dispose of stocks in India.
Also do I need PAN # & how difficult is it to get one. Do I need to show my ration card or something?
All inputs welcome.
Thanks
Here is a broad list (you won't need all of them though):
PAN card
Voter's ID
Passport
Ration card
Driver's license
Employee ID card
Bank attestation facilities at the Indian end.
IT returns
Electricity/ Landline phone bill
And a good Buddy/Relative who can file your tax returns on your behalf.

trading in India and in Canada too. Watch out for the DTAA
Good Luck.
Hope this helps.

PAN is must now, you might be able to open the online trading account without it also but won't be able to do any transction which is more than 50000 Rs.
You need only 3 document
PAN card, Photo ID card for identity proof, address proof(It could be CC so its not a problem).
Once you have decleared your self as Non resident than you can only open NRI online trading and Demat account, which has some restriction offcourse.
Else talk to stock broker if they can sell for you from their account, If you are interested I can find more detail.
