I know that stock is not a favorite topic around this forum, but still to know different views of desi’s I’ll give it a try….

What stocks do people think will go up with the coming stimulus package from Obama & also the federal budget from Flaherty on 27th of January ??????

Want to know the insight of seniors around here who can share their views of the upcoming (above mentioned) events & suggest us to buy some stocks whose value would get a descent appreciation. The market is already up from last some days because of the expected stimulus package & federal budget, & might go still up when these events take place.

I would suggest infrastructure stocks. They would be the most benefited by the stimulus packages. There are a wide range of infrastructure stocks that are out there in the market and you would need the helps of a good financial consultant to point you in the right direction. Stocks like Bombardier, Bridge making companies, Road making companies,Cement, ashpalt, granite companies. Sewage making companies will benefit. Also companies producing green products and companies using innovative green recycling methods would be a good bet (for example a Canadian company has a technology to extract Uranium from ash got from coal fired electric plants in China).

Having said that, Stocks to avoid at all costs are :
commodity based stocks (like Copper, Nickel, Silver, steel etc...) esp. Junior start ups.
Oil Sands and Petrolum exploration company (in the short term).
Automobile and Automobile parts
Real estate and housing

If you look in the long term, Oil sand and Petroleum producing companies will be a safe bet as Oil is expected to go again to $100 + after April 2010 (after going as low as $25 in the coming months) and once again there will be a huge speculation put up on oil stocks and take them to unbeliveable heights in the second half of 2010.

Hope this helped. All in MHO alone.
Investpro can help you more on this.

Peace by TK

bank stocks would be my top pick now.
they're pretty much bottomed-out and bailed-out ... get ready to watch them RISE buy as much as 25% in the next 6 to 8 weeks.

and i agree with tamil, avoid anything automotive stocks or dependent on automotive .. the bailout will be not enough ...

I will go all out for Oil Exploration companies. OIL is back in business. Today, it touched 50 Agaain. It will be in the range of 80-100 in 6 month to 01 year time. All OIL stocks will go back to theier previous levels very shortly

Desi-Driller,
I disagree with all your statements.
Oil is not expected to recover (to $100 and above) until After June 2010. Until 2010, a lot of Oil exploration companies will go bust. There is no money these days for exploration and if you follow the stock market most of the junior Oil exploration companies are going bust. Similar is the case with Oil sands play.
The long term prospects are for the Oil producing companies. Even they have not bottomed out yet. You need a choose a oil producing company with good assets, Good producing wells and no debt.

I aso agree with Desi905 that Bank stocks will do well in the future esp. Citibank / Group and most of the bailed out banks (which are available for a couple of dollars each) and not banks like BMO, TD etc....

Another stock area to avoid is the Retail sector. Retail sector will be very hard hit from this new year. Expect a lot of bankruptcies.

Hope this helps. All in MHO only.

TK,
Please read my post carefully. I never recomond small Canaadian Exploration Companies. I was trying to put myself on big Oil Producers like Shell, Cheveron, Petrocanaada, Imperial Oil Etc. Etc.

I love to read predictions !!!

Just some time back (not more than 6 months) people were boasting for OIL even @ $125. Same are now going against @ $50.

... do you want GOD to LOL & ROFL? Tell him your future plans ...

Stock market predictions are no different in hindsight.
