Even the PC repair shop is going to charge for the software+ their time for installation. The only "legal" way is to buy Windows XP CD (OEM version would be cheaper).

OEM does not come with tech support and retail packaging. The software XP home is available at best buy for $242.99. OEM XP home at Tigerdirect.ca would cost you 109.99 + shipping.

I purchased an OEM xp pro from ebay...from a guy in Toronto for about 70$ more than a year ago.
Note: Try to see that you can purchase with the sp2 upgrade. It has some security fixes. Or at least check if you can easily download sp2 so you can upgrade.
