Even the PC repair shop is going to charge for the software+ their time for installation. The only "legal" way is to buy Windows XP CD (OEM version would be cheaper).

OEM does not come with tech support and retail packaging. The software XP home is available at best buy for $242.99. OEM XP home at Tigerdirect.ca would cost you 109.99 + shipping.

I purchased an OEM xp pro from ebay...from a guy in Toronto for about 70$ more than a year ago.
Note: Try to see that you can purchase with the sp2 upgrade. It has some security fixes. Or at least check if you can easily download sp2 so you can upgrade.

You haven't mentioned primarily for what you use your computer. If you can sacrifice Windows programs for speed and malware free operations, you can try DSL(www.damnsmalllinux.org), Puppy linux(www.puppylinux.org) or Ubuntu(www.ubuntu.com). These all are graphical operating systems and come with MS Office compatible office suite, Firefox web browser, Thunderbird Email client etc. You can try live CDs and can try out OS running directly from CDROM without actually installing it on hard drive. If you feel comfortable, then you can install it to hard drive. You can, if you want, then install Virtual Box(www.virtualbox.org) which is a virtual server environment and will let you install Windows on it. On one of my Windows computer I run DSL within Virtual box which I use to browse the net. That way any malware stays away from my other windows programs.
