Any suggestions..?

If you are updating Windows after a long time, 6 hrs. is not unusual.
The "update" that took you 5 mins to download is simply a loader for the real stuff, which gets downloaded on the fly.
Anyhow, what is the problem that you are trying to solve?
If it is IE freezing up, then what is your version of IE?
Also, when was the last time you cleared the IE cache?

Try to download the Service Pack and then install it.. (Download the Network Installation File).
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/6/A/E6A04295-D2A8-40D0-A0C5-241BFECD095E/W2KSP4_EN.EXE
This should help.. After you have finished downloading ( may be about 250 MB)run the exe file to install the service pack.
Also.. you should get the IE 6 Service Pack 1.. thats the latest for Windows 2000.

There is one for Express Install which is actually a small program which will download rest of the files from Microsoft.. This is stand alone.. you can download the full thing and install it from this..
