Hi
I need to urgently buy a laptop for CGA. Whats the best way...Buy from the US or from Canada. Will there be a big difference in price?

If from the US... where across the border should I go? Any suggestions for dealers .... brand.. etc (trying to get a better deal)
What about from Canada? Buy DELL online or go and shop around in future shop etc.

The specs recom. are :
Software:
Windows 7 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1* – English language versions only
Internet Explorer 8
Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 or 2010
Acrobat Reader 9.x
Windows Media Player 11.x
Adobe Flash Player most recent version

Hardware:
Intel core 2 duo or equivalent processor
2 GB Memory
Up to 20 GB available hard drive space
DVD/CD-ROM drive
Video card with 128 MB onboard memory and DirectX technology
15” Monitor capable of 1024 X 768 resolution
Sound card and speakers
Broadband (high speed) Internet connection

All suggestions will be useful, (my knowledge on computers is very limited)

Thank you for your time and patience in reading thru

If you are shopping from the US consider the cost of shipping to a US destination and picking it up....if you go to Niagara Falls consider the cost of pick up- Gas $15 plus $3.25 toll (No toll to go to the US...but Canada charges a stiff toll). plus shipping cost- may vary from $15 to 40. Also consider your time for pick up. Unless the difference is well over $150 it is not worth it. Plus if they catch you with the laptop at the border you will have to cough up the HST and pay duty if the laptop is not manufactured in the US or Mexico.

For the specs that you have listed, I don't think there is any need to go to the US.
It seems to be a fairly standard config. and while prices are cheaper in the US, I personally don't think it's worth the trouble in this case.
You should be able to get this config for less than $500 CAD at Best Buy, Future Shop, Staples or Tiger Direct.
Sometimes Wal*Mart has great deals going on as well.
Just spend some time shopping locally before you decide to drive to the US.

Some of the software you listed is free, such as IE 8.0, Adobe Reader, Flash & Media Player.
Most laptops include a trial version of Office, but you'll need to register and pay for a full license.
Regarding Internet connection, don't use any pre-packaged broadband plan that comes with the laptop - it'll probably be quite expensive.
Instead, get a DSL or Cable internet from Bell/Rogers at the best possible discount.

Good luck!

Hi,

I am planning to buy Toshiba from States (Wal-mart, Washington) for my sister in India. Here's the configuration which I found pretty up-to-date and to my liking.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=13341716&findingMethod=rr&#Specifications

I am getting it for $378 from the store. Moreover, since they are exempting sales tax from July 1st, hopefully I won't have to pay any tax on it and will get it for the price advertized. I found it to be a good deal as the similar ones in Canada don't cost less than $500.

See if you can find a similar deal across the Cdn border in ON, and if you have any friend/relative there you can provide their address and purchase it online. However, do compare with CDN, and how much you'll have to spend in GAS/Tolls/sales tax etc. It didn't cost me much in this aspect as the nearest wal-mart in states from my place is only 1/2 hour drive.

Hi 'dfwrp' when you said AMD exert too much heat, means are they not reliable? I believe they are competitive and few of my friends who bought it found no issues with the heat. Could you please elobarate further on it?

Thanks.

AMD processors run hotter than Intel processors.
It may not differ much in performance but AMD laptops might be noisier (due to fan running almost full time) and hotter if you intend to place them in your lap.

Specially older AMD processors (Turion Series) with ATI graphic chipsets.
