You will have to shop around - there is no way to know where you can get best quality for best price without shopping around.
I don't know where you live, so can't give specific store recommendations.
Start by looking at Rona, Home Depot, Home Hardware as well as flooring speciality stores (large scale flooring stores).
Compare the price per sq. ft. with the quality.

With laminate, the "quality" is essentially the thickness - the more the thickness the better it will last.
It's much simpler than shopping for hardwood, where you have to take many more factors into consideration and quality varies a lot.
Remember that for laminate, you get what you pay for.
You can pay 99c. sq. ft. for very low end 7mm thick plates.
Since you are planning to install in your main living room, you have to take into account durability and style.
You don't want it to look flaky and "cheap" in your main living room.
So you may go with higher thickness, ideally 14mm but 12 mm might also work.

You have to shop around, there is no silver bullet.

As for contractor, laminate flooring is relative easy to install by yourself, unlike hardwood.
Once you rip out your existing floor, you will realise that it's only a matter of snapping them together - you can probably do the entire floor in a few hrs.
The only complexity is the edges and snapping them with the baseboards.
There is you are not careful, you will get bubbles, swells or creaky floor.
For that, you can ask someone who has done it before to help you.

If you would rather have a professional do the whole thing, that's fine too.
Most contractors charge about $2 sq. ft.
99% of the time the store where you buy from will also install it for you.
Rona and Home Depot do, I know.
It's better to get it installed from them because that way, if there are some defective pieces, they'll replace for free.
