Hi,
If your wife completes the 600 hours in the last 52 weeks or since the last claim she is eligible for Maternity benefits of max. 15 weeks. This can be taken before 8 weeks of the delivery date.
http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/ei/types/special.shtml#Maternity3
Next is the parental benefits for 35 weeks which comes after that which either of the spouse can take (provided the husband is also working and has the same eligibility condistions.)
http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/ei/types/special.shtml#Parental3
After all this when the wife returns to work and she finds that her work is not there, then she will be on EI which is for another 45 weeks.
Hope this helps

Once your EI claim has approved, it is valid for 1 year maximum. Your all benefits will be terminated after 1 year. To take any kind of other benefits after 1 year, you must have worked for required hours in last 1 year.
Maternitly benefits can be applied before 8 weeks of the dilivery date. You can't apply before it.
Parental benefits can be applied by any one parent at a moment. Both parent can share this benifit. This benefit will be started after birth of child.
Consider following case:
If someone has taken EI benefits from 1st Jan 2008 to 1st Sept 2008 and her dilivery date is 1st Feb 2009. She can't apply for meternity before 8 weeks of 1st Feb. So, she can apply for meternity on approx. 1st Dec 2008. She won't get benefits from 1st Sept 2008 to 1st Dec 2008.
When she will receive meternity benefit from 1st dec 2008. It will be terminated on 1st Jan 2009 because the claim is valid for maximum 1 year. you will end up to receive meternity benefit of 4 week instead of 8 week because she didn't finish require hours in last year and claim validity is up to 1 year only.
Even she can't apply for parental benefit if she has not finished 600 hours in last year. But her spouse can apply for parental if he wants and he has finished 600 hours in last year.
I hope this will help.
Note:
I am going through this process. I've baby of 4 months old. My wife got meternity benefit of 5 week only because of previous EI claim as I explain in abouve case. She didn't get parental and I can not afford the parental benefit. So we lost parental benefit.
