Hi,

I am writing in this forum to get a better understanding if other health care professionals who graduated as Dental Assistant here in Canada have gone thru this humiliating questions in an interview like Will you clean the Rest rooms / Wash rooms.

I had a friend of mine being interviewed with a Desi Dentist in Brampton and was asked if he will clean the rest rooms also apart from assisting the dentist as an Assistant.

I also know that no job is humiliating, but this is like asking a s/w developer will be clean the restrooms in office as well. I don't understand, that being a Dentist and running a practice, can't the Dentist hire a Janitor @ 300 per month or so ( in Brampton, you might get cheaper than that ) .

I feel that that the Dentist there deserves the WORST adjective to his credibility.

Members, please share your similar experiences, if you have any. And if possible please comment on this kinda behaviour.

Welcome to Canada which will exploit a immigrant by saying that there is no dignity of labour and who best can put that into practice, if not a desi. The same desi maynot ask a born native to do those kinds of work but will jump on the first oppertunity to ask a visible minority aka an Immigrant. You canot blame him too b'cos he might have faced the same barriers / spent a lot of money to come up in Canada after overcome all the barriers that he had to face in Canada being an immigrant.
It is really up to your friend, if he wants to work in that office or reject the offer and work in another office. There is discrimination at almost every work place in Canada to immigrants and you may find that there are various levels of discrimination for immigrants and if you are very rigid in your thoughts you may not be able to stay in a stable job.
Most common kind of discrimination faced in work place :
1. Doing things that are not part of your job like cleaning toilets, throwing garbage, asking to vaccum floors, clean kitchen table, upkeep of existing toilets etc...
2. promotions not coming to visible minorities as much as they seem to be coming for local people.

I doubt if there are any guidelines that can put your employer into a legal mess as these kind of duties /chores are generally not documented (that is put into your employment letter)

The choice is in your hands.

Peace by TK

Discrimination #1 in your list is easy to prove and you could sue the employer to likely win some sort of compensation in court, although don't go hoping for million $$ settlements.
Maybe a few thousand $$ or so, at best.

Point #2 is extremely hard to prove in a court.
It's almost to the point of not worth trying, unless you managed to get a hold of written email or internal memo by the management stating they will be discriminating against immigrants :)

Indeed it is really true that often desi are one of the first to take advantage of visible minorities. This used to be the case even in the US where the main factor was really the 'visa status' and a range of malpractices by the Indian firms and several US firms as well. The second point above as well is clear in Canada and you see that most of the 'success stories' in Canada are limited to IT folks. There is massive labor market discrimination in Canada against so called 'visible' minorities. The term has been denounced by many and yet it continues to be in use.

Thanks for your replies :

My friend denied the job and didnot even think of going to work there even if it is offered.

Per the reply from, tamilkuravan, " You canot blame him too b'cos he might have faced the same barriers / spent a lot of money to come up in Canada after overcome all the barriers that he had to face in Canada being an immigrant."

Even if that Dentist in profession or any body of us have gone thru the situation of struggle , we should never ever continue to impose things that are not relevant to the jobs that you are hired on. Today, i have posted this kind of comment on the forum, may be down the line, there might be some body else posting the same. Lets not do this ever to any body like that. Well, if i was hiring a Janitor to do the job then the job is self explanatory but definately not for an engineer who is hired in my office for doing s/w or for related activities. If i am hiring an Engineer in a Gas station that i own, then i would ask him if he is comfortable in cleaning the toilets , mopping the floor etc. apart from the cashier job. Because thats what he is hired for.

Like most of the folks on this forum, who always look for Desi dentists , see these are the mentalities of the dentists. CANNOT EVEN shell 300 dollars or so to do the rest room cleaning. Hence when you are going to the cheap desi clinics especially in Brampton, understand that the Assistant who is helping the dentist might as well be cleaning the toilets and now u know how hygenic they are , even the thought of it makes me feel sick to ever visit such type of clinics.

Enjoy your day !!!
