I wamt to reformat hard drive of my Dell Computer. Can someone guide me as to how to back up my Laptop hard drive on my PC. I have checked and confirmed that my PC hard drive has more than enough capacity to back up laptop data. I ave Dell OS Cd which I can use to restore OS after formatting the drive.

Thanks

One option would be to get an USB hard drive enclosure and use the hard drive from your desktop computer to back up data. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0v_fUUuNKA

Why don't you restore your system to the factory settings. That saves a lot of time and resources, and always works for me. I always do it once a year. After restoring it, I run a complete spyware scan, defrag, virus scan and everything works like new.

My 2 cents.

I have seen a friend using a cable for exactly the same purpose and it was very easy. I don't remember what to call the cable but it was almost looking like this (may be this is the one?)

Note sure where you will get it and in how much though. I am planning to buy one any ways as it is a great tool to have.

"The NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter implements a bridge between one USB port and one ATA, Serial ATA, or ATAPI based mass storage device port. The USB 2.0 to IDE Drive Adapter turns any ATA or SATA drive into a convenient external drive. Easily transfer files from computer or notebook, back up files, or store large file archives on hard drives. The Hi-Speed USB interface provides for easy installation with its Plug and Play design."

All the best.

Quick question in regards to this. Do i need to back up my hard drive, before i do this? Or is that not necessary?

Thanks for yr reply. I have a lot of viruses plus there are these windows that say i am missing some .dlls I am thinking restoring my system may solve my problems.

Restoring and formatting are two different things and will solve different problems. In this case restoring MIGHT help you with the dll issues, but will not get rid of the viruses or other malware. Remember, restoring only resets your settings to a desired date in the past, but doesn't get rid of the programs/data.

If you decide to take a backup before formatting your system, make sure you scan it with a good anti virus or you might end up infecting your PC with the virus that you have in your laptop.

To backup, the easiest would be to get a pen drive and save the required documents/pics/spreadsheets etc. to it before you erase everything that you have on the HDD.
