Hi,

I did my first landing in October 2008 and left Canada within 2 weeks and intend to return only in 2010.

I never worked in Canada. Can someone advise on the following:

1. Is my income before getting PR in the year 2008, taxed? Or only my international income for the duration from Oct - Dec. 2008 is taxed?

2. Do I need to be present for filing the tax? Or can this be done by an agent?

3. I earn roughly $2500 a month outside Canada (my international income). Howmuch tax do I have to pay for 2008.

Best regards.

Sammy

-- Your income prior to your landing is not taxed. Also, since you never worked in Canada and left within two weeks, you seem to be a Non resident of Canada for tax purpose. (I hope you do not own a house/land and do not have any immediate family members residing in Canada.). In that case, you do not need to file (and pay) taxes. But if you decide to file taxes as a resident, CRA will gladly accept your payment! :-)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have my son (19 years old) studying there in University, who intends to apply for OSAP (student loan) and in the OSAP application, it is required to mention the following:

1. Father's total income as indicated on line 150 of his 2008 Candian income tax return

3. Father's net income as indicated on line 236 of his 2008 Candian income tax return

3. Father's other taxable and non-taxable 2008 income

Can you or somebody in this forum, advise the following:

1. What figures do I need to put in these three locations, for an international income of $2500 per month, having got the PR only in October 2008.

2. Do I need to be physically present in Canada for filing the IT return for first time, or some agency (third party) can do it on my behalf.

3. What is the links for the IT tax form, where these line 150 and line 236 are defined.

Thanks in advance, appreciate your responses.

-Sammy

Ahhh...you have your son studying and also applying for the student loan in Canada. So I guess you will be considered a canadian resident for the tax purpose.

You do not need to be physically present in Canada to file your tax return - your representative can file on your behalf - but you have to sign your return. The representative cannot sign on your behalf.

I will let others/financial experts to answer your remaining questions.
