Dear CD's
I am in bit of dilemma and looking forward for a good response. I am a PR and landed in Canada on August 2007 and left Canada along with my family on August 2008. I filed mine and my wife income tax in 2008. I called up the CRA to discontinue the CTB as I have moved back to India for longer period of time. Meanwhile I again filed mine and my wife income tax return FY 2008-2009 from India. However I forgot to file the income tax return this year. I never checked my online bank account for last 2 years but last week when I checked and to my surprise the CTB kept pouring money to my wife’s account till date.
I am planning to come back by April 2011 and my wife will be joining me in a June 2011. My queries is do I need inform CRA about stopping the CTB or should I file tax return now since the date is over for filing return. I am unable to understand what to do. Please help me in this regards
Waiting for the response.
Jasjot
If CRA deems you resident of Canada for income tax purposes then you should file income tax in Canada and then you also become eligible to receive CCTB. However, it would be best to ask an accountant or CRA itself if they are treating you as resident of Canada for income tax puposes.
