I am a new resident of Canada for 2008 tax year, and I submitted my GST/HST credit application form RC 151 to CRA a few weeks back. I had also filed my 2008 taxes in April this year. Today I recieved a letter from CRA asking for my 2008 world income before entering Canada.

My question is - do I need to report my salary from India to CRA to receive the GST/HST credit?

Thanks,
Raj

Yes.

The form RC 151 is very clear. You had to show your income for 2007 whole year and from 1st January, 2008 till the date you landed in Canada. It seems you only filled income for the year 2008 only and that's the reason they are asking income for 2007 as the GST credits are based on last year's income. So, based on your 2007 income you will get benefit for 2008 and after you filed 2008 tax return you will get GST credits in year 2009 and for that they will need the total 2008 year income which will be income before you landed and the income after you landed in Canada. this income is required for GST purposes and You will only pay taxes for the income earned in Canada.
