The remote key for my car (chevy uplander) is not working even after I changed the batteries and reactivated the remote. If I buy a generic car remote from Canadian Tyre will it serve the purpose (open and lock all the doors and remote start the car) or should I be getting one from the Chevy dealer? If anyone has suggestions or advise regarding this it would be greatly appreciated.

I went through the same problem with my chevy too.
I have security lock, if the car deducts that there is somebody trying to open it or someone has used his remote key near to my car it would not let me start the car.I usually wait 10 minutes if the car does not let me start and then restart for security precaution.
Then the key died on me.
I went to a chevy dealer and was told the key would cost 150 bucks/key + programming each key would cost another 75 bucks per key. Typically they do 2 keys.
I went to e-bay and got two good(brand new) keys by using the car make, model and the key code on the back of the key.
I got 2 keys for about 12 bucks + 7 bucks for US postal service postage.
I went to the local chevy dealer and got it installed for 150 bucks.
You could go to a local car garage and get the key programmed for cheaper price. I did not have the time or patience.
You could check whether the keys are emitting any signal by taking it to a chevy dealer and he could put it into a box and check if it is working or not. If it works it a battery problem if not the key is dead.
My 5 cents on this issue.

Thank you for your reply Vandemataram. I would never have thought of ebay.
Are these keys readily available on ebay? Is there a specific dealer? Also, do you know if the generic keys would do the job?
