Hi
If we are going out of country for about 6 weeks during winter months (Dec-Jan), what precautions should be taken to maintain heating inside the home when nobody is in the home for 6 weeks.
Thanks
You can keep it to very minimum.

18 degrees is considered safe. do not turn off completely. I know a family whose roof collapsed due to shrinkageor other reason ( note sure) and pipes bursted. He is still fighting Insurance the cost was $80K.
secure with alarm is recommended. Give access key to your friend ( Just In Case). Have all the phone numbers handy.
Put gold etc in the locker. For 4-5 weeks it should be more then enough.

Also if you are going during peak Snow season, have a contract with someone to remove the snow from your driveway. Otherwise when you comeback you may have to pay large amount of money to excavate huge pile of ice.
I know a family who paid $500 for a very short driveway.

Either hold all your postal delivery or have them pick up regularly from your door step.
Too many flyers at door generally means - no one is inside the house, lets break in.

Thanks all of you for your suggestions.
We are thinking to buy a remote thermometer and give remote to our next door neighbour. So they can keep eye on our home temperature from their home on daily basis. Also our friend will visit once or twice a week.
To be a safe side, we are also thinking to drain out water from the pipes. So in case heater goes off for any reason, at least water pipes will not burst if there is no water inside. Because our insurance company does not cover damage due to heating failure if you are out of home for more than 4 days.
So we don't want to take any chances. Because we all know how good insurance companies are when it comes to pay.
Thanks for reminding about snow removal. We did not think about it.
Don't forget to pay your bills/statements.
If you have plants in the house, someone will have to water them
Connect some lights to a timer and have them go on/off automatically.
