Staying in India after getting Canadian Citizenship

Friends,

I believe, at least some of us must be having same issue or doubts like us. I got citizenship in year 2008 but had to stay away from Canada due to family reasons.

I visited Canada only once in 2009 after almost 10 months stay in india.

I stayed for one month and again, returned to India and may go to Canada after an year or so.

Is there any restriction on length of the stay in India? Would there be any problems/issues if we return to Canada after 1 or 2 years?

Anyone of you stayed in India for a longer duration (1 or 2 years at a strech)?

Please share your experiences in this regard at the earliest. I knew, there is no
restriction on length of stay out side of canada but want to be so sure about it.

If you are a canadian citizen, it is your choice to stay wherever you like provided the country you are staying does not have restrictions. If you are not a OCI or PIO, I think you can not stay in India for more than six months.

You can stay any where in the world. However some places (e.g. Maldives) may not have Canadian consulate locally to help you if you need immediate assistance (and Indian consulate in maldives will not help you any more since you are not Indian citizen)

Would the Indian consulate help ( e.g. Maldives ) if you have an OCI ? Secondly, would the Canadian Embassy help you in India if you are in India on OCI ?

My understanding is OCI is not citizenship but a life long visa to India and hence you cannot claim any rights that an Indian citizen has when you are abroad.

Canadian Consulate in Colombo takes care of Maldives and will have to look after you if have problem in Maldives.

I am not sure what the correct answer is for your second question. I think it depends on what help you are looking for.

If there is a major disaster/war in India and if you have to be evacuated - Canadian government may help (depending on rules at that time) but if you are charged with a criminal offense and are jailed, they may not be able to help you since you are an OCI

These scenarios never happened for now. So it's hard to guess how the law will be interpreted by Canadian and Indian laws

Please keep us posted on the subject. I know, there is no restriction on how long a Canadian Citizen can stay away from country, but worried a bit since I dont know
anyone else living/lived in India for a longer duration like me.

I would be very happy to know your experiences.
