In my dad's case, I have observed that approx. 150 in mercury equals approx. 180 in digital.
It's a big difference, but varies from time to time and day to day.

Sometimes symptoms of high BP may not be apparent and people may not realize when BP is increasing until it gets very high and they start feeling dizzy.
For example, my dad doesn't feel anything until it gets into 160 or above.
Unlike the blood glucose machines, the BP machines cost very little (< $40 for a basic machine) and doesn't require ongoing purchase of equipment.

I second. It is good to invest in such meters for weekly/monthly home based monitoring, but visit to doctor would be good twice a year or once a year for high BP patients.
